On-line Banking Safe or Unsafe ? Who trusts
I have stayed away from on-line banking for the longest time due to Keyloggers, etc, (Although I will pay bills on-line with ACH) But I refuse so far to acess my banking account from the Internet due to the lack of secuirty in place i.e. two-factor autentication ( like a banks safety deposit box, two keys to work, or some form like MS has that can identify my machine ) Because IP can be spoofed even that I don't trust because say I use on-line banking and I complain that I did'nt make a transaction, i.e empty my bank account to some bank in North Korea or Iran, Russia or China. Some one used a keylogger and My ip to generate the transaction how do I Prove that I did'nt and more so how long will it take to get my money back. Kind of like the headache of Identy theft, or getting errors on a credit report fixed , what a pain in the Keister. But I dread the day of being forced to use On-line banking or pay through the nose not to.
SO my poll question is how many use On-Line banking? What secruity do you take. What kind of TOS does your bank offer or force? |
I use online banking for online purchases with my credit card and for transferring funds between savings and checking accounts. Maybe do all this once or twice a month. I have a software firewall that I use constantly and keep updated.

I wouldn't be able to survive without on-line banking.
One bank uses a personal card with 16 numbers on it that the client picks up at the branch. At sign in the web site asks for 3 of the 16 numbers on a random basis. In addition to the ID and password. Another bank gives a personal key chain sized random number generator that is used as a second level. In addition to the ID and password. And normal AV and firewall, of course. |
Yes I do everything. I only use encrypted connection of course.
I'm behind my router and hardware firewall. Also software firewall. Anti Virus updated every 6 hours and same with all anti spyware programs which are updated constantly. And I do a complete scan of both hard drives every day. Virus and spyware/adware scans. Plus I'm no newbie so I am pretty damn save. ;) That and I use Linux. :) Though just in case I never keep more than $1000 in on-line accounts. Nor do I make purchases over $500 on-line at one time. |
It's perfectly safe. IP cannot be spoofed with the exception of UDP packets. TCP needs to establish a connection in two directions (if someone sends a SYN packet with a fake source, they won't get an ACK packet back). Every online bank I've seen doesn't ask for your entire password or pin at once, but for random chars, in order to negate the threat of keyloggers. Most require one set of details to log in and view information, and another which you only use to make transactions and do 'dangerous' stuff.
Of course there is a lot of publicity surrounding online banking scams, etc. This does not mean it is unsafe for anyone except novice users. Most of the scams are phishing scams, where scammers send out mass-mails claiming to be from a bank, and hoping that someone with an IQ lower than their shoe size will think "wow, my bank wants me to visit their homepage at ht1p://www.geocities.com/~mybank/really.html and type in my password, ssn, pin, credit card number, etc in order to [insert lame reason here]". |
Hello All,
I've been using online banking for my personal accounts for quite some time now. I just started using business online banking for my business and so far, no complaints. It makes paying bills SO much easier! You don't have to worry about stamps, you get to store your payees info within your account, you can make recurring payments if you'd like, etc... - It's wonderful! -SlickVic78 |

OH and I block a few million ip address 24/7 using ProtoWall (finally got it working with sp2, hehe) which I update every 24hours.
Oh and the best option, I format every month. lol Seems like it. Think 3months is about the longest. I nuke the beast. Meaning its overidden with random BS 25 times or more. Zeros does a good job too. hehe Oh and all third party and non trusted cookies, themp files, internet temp files, etc. are cleared every time I close all browser windows. Oh and I locked down my PC according to FBI and microsoft standards. :) I also get government alerts via http://www.us-cert.gov/ and of course microsoft alrts and important newsgroups posts. I also block bad sites using ie-ads and Spyware & Adware ActiveX Blocker File. And a few others i cant remember off the top of my head. So i think i am pretty damn safe. :) Oh and IIS Lockdown tool when I do have IIS runnin and installed which I dont atm. Disable all un-needed services. Give grc.com a good vist. Oh and of course all important information on my comupter is encypted. Very Good place to start: http://www.markusjansson.net/exp.html Google is your friend btw. :) Oh and dont use crapy in plain text auto complete bs....so easy to get your pws... ;) use AI RoboForm instead. |
