reformatting harddrive on an old pc
how do i clean install using w98se update disc without installing w98 first? thanks |
If you try to install the update without Win98 installed , you will be asked to furnish proof - at that point, stick your Win 98 CD in the CD ROM drive and "point" to it.

thanks for the reply
aaargh can't seem to find the w98 cd recall that you could use the update disc only . . Last edited by waspboy at Aug 3 2002, 04:03 PM |
That's why they call it an "update" disc. Either get your win98 cd or get a copy of ME that's not an upgrade. How about NT instead. Much more stable.

If you bought the 98SE update from Microsoft, it *CANNOT* be used to do a fresh install. The CD was designed to be an update only and does not ask you for proof of a previous version. There is no way to install the update without having Windows 98 installed first.
I was desperate awhile back and even swapped setup.exe's etc to make it work in DOS. The setup will load, but it quits out before it starts copying files. Look for an OEM copy of 98SE, that's what I ended up doing. |
I got my update from MS and had no problem with clean install
