what version of linux to use?

i have a new computer that i would like to play around with different os's before putting xp on it. what is a good version of linux to put on for a newbie?

i've already tried linspire and everything went fine until it got to the desktop and it just hung, wouldn't let me do anything so that option is out.

thanks.

Hey,

Maybe Red Hat 9 and Xandros 2.0.

And maybe this one:

hxxp://releases.ubuntu.com/warty/warty-release-install-i386.iso

Yeap. Now I'm pissed off. I cant find where I downloaded the damn thing to. I got it installed in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 SP1 but I cant find the darn isos. lol

Forgot to burn it. :( Now waiting for locate32 to finish updating its datebase. hehe If it cant find it then nothing can.

check http://www.linux.org/dist/index.html , you can search for category of use, plattaform, language, etc

but my two cents go to gentoo linux http://www.gentoo.org/ (yes, the source based one!) the best if you want to play and learn linux!

have fun!

another good site for choices in a *old* post by felixml: http://distrowatch.com/

Download all of them here. :)

i want one that is very easy to install. i just want to play around the desktop environment to see what it is like.

something like lycoris looked easy, but they only have a 45 day trial. which i'm sure is long enough, but i'd rather not have a limit in my usage time.

Xandros should be the answer. Where to get one with no time limit? I guess you have to pay for it. They used to have a try out. I don't know about the current version.
