FIXED w/format



I have a problem with windows xp, it will NOT connect to the internet, router or my other computer on the network.

1- It has an onboard nic
2- When disconnecting the cable the icon tells that cable is disconnected, when
it is reconnected it also says connected as it should.
3- When first built and all was up and running all at once while being left to just run
without it being touched ZA popped up and made the notice about a NEW
NETWORK being found or something to that effect.
4- Since that time it has not been able to connect to anything and it could before.
5- I installed a second nic card to just see if it was something on the MB that was
screwy and still no dice.
6- Now that I was running out of time as the better half wanted HER computer back
so I installed win2k on another partition and after all the installs, internet
connection is back but only for win2k.
7- I have scanned and scanned this from win xp and win 2k and all have came up
with nothing found at all.
8- So today I did a reinstall of xp and choose repair and still no internet
connection


Any ideas as to what may be wrong. I am tired of looking and can not find anything at all like this. Help requested

At first glanze it sound like a problem with the software firewall.

I agree with Unicorn, if you didn't give ZA permission to use the new network when the alarm popped up, it will be blocking everything from using it. You will need to go into ZA and add the newwork manually to get things back to normal.

That is what I was also thinking except for one thing....
on Xp the IP address is one ( 169.xxx.x.xxx) and on Win2k it is another (192.xxx x.xxx). All computers go through the router which assigns IP numbers to computers as needed. Win2k gets assigned a number by the router and it will work fine. WinXP on the other hand does not get assigned a number because the computer when it is booting from XP will not communicate with the router and after boot up you still can not log in to the router. I have logged into the router from another computer on the network and there is no attempt to communicate out. It is the same connection just different OS.

As to the firewall it has been uninstalled double checked to be sure it was disabled.

ps: The computer in quetion is dual booting Xp & 2k. Only 2k will connect to
internet. Also on the network are 2 other connections all going thtough
a router.

Check that the XP partition is using your router as it's gateway and change the IP to one in the range of 192.xxx.x.xxx, from the look of it windows is installing a default connection when installed.

Ok some new findings, see attached picture.
Look closely at where there are the red circles, that
should be the ip address from where it was pinged. Something appears corrupt.

But the again things seldom are what they appear to be.
Is it a fresh install you said? Then reinstall, but make sure you format the partition inbetween. Maybe the error can be fixed from within XP but my guess is that it will be better, and faster too, to perform a clean install. And if you get the same error once again there is something wrong with your XP install CD.

I think you may be correct as too a clean install, but if I do a clean install on the partition that has xp now will it still be able to dual boot 2k without reinstalling 2k? Just shooting the darn thing may be better.

It should still be able to dual boot with 2k. Normally.
I'm not sure what happens when one install xp, install 2k, deletes xp and the reinstalls xp... Make a backup copy of boot.ini and keep somewhere close to you, format the xp partition and reinstall xp. That's the way I should have done it.

Thanks will check this out.......what I should have really done was not mess with it. I was doing her a favor by a simple upgrade and now she ain't happy with the upgrade. I will remember "If It Ain'T Broke Don't Mess With It". LOL

Will backup boot ini but was wondering what happens to MBR during the format?
If it was mine I would write zeros and start over completely but I don't have that option.
