Hi

I am running WinXP Home OEM with SP2 integrated and since the last install, I have started to get more than my fair share of "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". "We are sorry for the inconvenience".

When I click on "click here" to see what the error report contains, it shows the following at the top:

Error signature --------------------------------------------------------------

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: shdocvw.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2180 Offset: 0001408d

You can see more technical info about the error report by clicking on "click here" again, but after looking at it, I don't understand any of it.

There is also a file in C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\a3c8_appcompat.tx t

But again, I don't understand any of it.

It appears to be the same error each time, as shown above.

Up until a week or so ago, I may have got the odd similar error every so often, but I am now getting this particular error too much for my liking and it seems to have started since I was prompted to install "JAVA 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05" - although that may just be coincidence, but I'm damn sure that it's only started since I installed that software.

Is anyone else getting this error and who can also help with this and tell me what's causing it and how to stop it please?

Regards

Some web plugins can cause that. From the IE tools menu choose "Manage Add-ons...." and disable your add-ons. If you find a site that needs one of them then enable it and see if IE crashes.

See:

Maybe:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=175930

Try running SFC to scan for altered files. If it detects that file as being the wrong version, it should give you an option to restore it. If that doesn't work the run SFC & tell it to

Start - Run - SFC - Extract 1 file - input (shdocvw.dll) - Start - Restore From: C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\ (or cdrom drive letter) Save File In: (c:\windows\system) - OK)

Also the latest version of the file is 6.0.2900.2518 which I have attached. See if that helps. :)

Hi DoG and war59312

war59312: With reference to the error, this is one of the reason I decided to buy XP Home OEM SP2 but I have not yet installed it yet. One thing is clear though and that it that I've only just started to get this error multiple times and I can tie it in to when I installed Sun Java Console ..... but it may be a coincidence, but I really hope that this is the cause because I've never installed Sun Java before.

I've now disabled it as recommended by DoG.

With reference to the URL's you gave; it appears that they are related to WinNT or earlier but I will make a note of your comments for looking at later.

The file you attached is the same version that I already have installed and I did a HASH check on both yours and my file and they are exactly the same.

I also ran SFC but there were no problems.

DoG: As you can see above, I disabled the Sun Java Console and we'll see what happens now but I will be installing XP Home OEM with SP2 over the next few days and I'll not be installing the Java Console afterwards.

Many thanks to you both. :)

Regards

I still find the MS Java VM much better than Sun's. I think i have several MS Java's here, holla if you want one.

Hi to you both

Yes I have MS Java VM version 5.00.3810 (5.07MB in size) which was digitally signed on March 6th 2003, but I don't know if that's the latest version but when I install XP HOME OEM with SP2, I may install the latest M$ version.
