I will be going with a friend to buy a printer and would like to know before going to look.....some good suggestions for a printer.

Will be used on Windows for normal home printing and some photo printing later. I am not thinking of spending lots of money for a printer but want one that will be nice and last awhile. Also will be looking at scanners. I was thinking about HP for both uses and not an all in one unit.

Ideas please..........

Thanks

Nothing wrong with HP, but I personally like Epson, I'm using an Epson Perfection 3170 Photo Scanner and Stylus Photo 960 printer. The printer even prints directly on CDs.

you might check ink prices too when buying, just so your aware of how much your going to be spending on new cartridges.

Love my HP6122 I bought to replace an aging HP 970C that gave good service.

My daughter prefers Epson, linvg in Italy where the ink cartridges are cheaper in the Epson line.

I prefer the paper tray setup HP uses, couldn't do without the HP duplex printing attachment. I do a lot of 4x6" jpg image printing and find the HP very good quality for that.

i have never had a problem with canon. tried a few others but they always have litle things go wrong with them. on some of the canons they have individual ink cartridges (like the i560 has 4, and I think the i860 or i9## has 6). then i refill the cartridges myself.

I have an Epson CX5200 and even though I'm happy with the product, I'm mad about the cost of ink. I'm also mad about the computer chip they use so you can't refill your own inks. :(

Not sure if I'd buy them again, but not sure what other I'd buy to replace it. I've had HP and their ink was $alot$ too. Now Lexmark uses the chips and they have always been loud. I'd consider them if they didn't have the chip.

KC, you may want to check some of the UK sies and see if they will ship oversea's. Epson cartridges are a quarter of the price of HP inks over here.

@DudeLive: Like Merlin says the r200 is the dogzbollox. One of the best printers around and dirt cheap inks as well.

I used to use Epson but now use HP. In my experience, the Epson printers were best for photos (using premium quality photo paper) and the HP is better for all purpose use. Especially when it comes to printing text. Photos are almost as good as the Epson was...barely noticeable difference.

Thanks to all that have replied...looking at the price of cartridhes is an idea that most often gets looked over.
The quality of photos means alot but if the quality of text drops way off then that is another thing to consider.

Still looking and reading

Thanks
