Just discovered my 9600 Pro AIW ATI board will not record sound with TV images because my cpu is not MMX capable. It is a 2.8GHZ P4 intel, in a state of the art Asus P4C800-E Deluxe mobo. Everything else works, but when I run the hardware test it says, sorry, no MMX=no sound.

Anybody ever hear of this? Solution?

So, the long and short is that I am going to record a TV show using my old AMD "slow" machine with my old Radeon AIW 128 board, which works fine, except the TV tuner is less sensitive than the 9600.

What a disappoinment with modern up to date gear.

Anybody got some ideas. I don't' see any solutions on the ATI and ASUS web sites.

Maybe junk this expensive board to buy what?

If no one here knows, try here

a lot of ATI people there

thanks RichardC. I registered as a member at driverheaven, didn't see anything pertinent, but made a post.

I can't help feeling I'm missing something here. Why would a late model Intel 2.8 Ghz cpu and a top of the line mobo not be able to record tv video and sound from an ati 9600 pro? The ATI 9600 Pro hardware check confirms that it cannot, because the cpu does not have MMX capability. Weird.

My old Asus A7V8X with 2100+ AMD cpu works fine for recording with the old ATI MMC interface.

Strange, i have the 3.2 prescott and it comes with MMX- the only differences i can find between the 2 processors are cache size and speed (obviously!). I also checked my 2.5 P4 and that has MMX enabled. The 2.5 is in an MSI 845E Max2 and the 3.2 is in a MSI 875P Neo2 FISR- sandra reports MMX on both boards.

Whats the model number of the processor?

That is:

sSpec Number

Also known as specification number. A five character string (SL36W, XL2XL, etc.) that is printed on the processor, and used to identify the processor. By knowing the processor's sSpec Number, you can find out the processor's core speed, cache size and speed, core voltage, maximum operating temperature and so on.

It's an Intel 82875P.

In theory, I understand from Intels web site, that it should support MMX instructions. When I run the PC Check routine from the ATI control panel, it tells me the cpu does not suport MMX Instructions and I read elsewhere that if that is true then it will not record TV video and audio correctly. I am able to record the video part of the TV, but no audio plays back.

Well, guess what? I completely uninstalled the ATI software with their included uninstall utility and reinstalled it all again. Now it works.

Seems to be AOK now.

btw, I found good tips in the driver heaven forum which pointed me to an omega driver set for ATI. I first tried that and it worked, then ininstalled it and put in the ATI stuff off their supplied disk. The Omega driver set works and is much faster to install.

Thanks for the input. Part of the learning curve, I guess. :)

while you are on the learning curve, you might want to go here
_http://www.thefallenangels.info/atitray/viewtopic.php?t=115 and check out the ATITray tool - pretty handy IMHO.

I'll try that out. Thanks richardc.

btw, did I mention that the PC Check utility in the ATI MMC is fauty, according to a guy on the driver heaven forum. ATI is said to be taking it out of the software soon.

glad you figured it out
I suggested Driversheaven as I knew that some ATI people hang out there

cheers
