Greetings guys and girls.

I have a very strange problem. Since about 5 days back, my mouse scroll wheel doesn't seem to work in a browser window. In any other window it works fine ie. In Word I can scroll up and down as much as I like, but open up a browser window and no go.

I re-installed mouse drivers etc, but can't seem to figure this out. I am sure it is a software problem and not the mouse itself. Tried another and same problem.

If I remeber correctly, this happened after I installed a spyware program ie Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster, Add aware, or played around with my host file.

Anyone have any ideas?

Do you have Comet Cursor software installed?

Voodoo 18th Jun 04 09:13 PM

No I Don't. No cursor software installed.

sometimes it comes with Real Networks real player
some times via an activex control or some other program
from a website
some consider it spyware

you could look at the backups done by your spyware removers
to see if there is some kind of cursor entry

I run Search & Destroy 1.2, Spyware Blaster 3.1, Add aware 6.0 with WinXP and have no problem. Have you tried a different mouse? I know you said it works fine under Wordpad, but I still want to know if you tried a different mouse.

I would go into control panel>system>hardware>device manager and remove the mouse and reboot. And let the system reinstall.
This seems to fix most of these problems.

Tried a different mouse and did what you said, user needs. No luck.

O well, guess I will have to format and re-install, because it is driving me nuts. Will just wait a few days more to see if someone comes up with a solution.

Thanks for the replies.

Of course you already tried a system restore right?

Is their any chance that IE is corrupt either by spyware like you said our for some other reason? Have you tried reinstalling IE or using the WinXP bootable install disk to check and repair Windows?

Voodoo 19th Jun 04 02:42 PM

No, unfortunately my system restore is turned of. Wanted to save a litlle disk space. Very clever of me, isn't it. Trust me, after a format I won't turn it of again.

I have the same problem in both IE and Firefox.

As to using XP repair disk; I will give that a go.
