I'm thinking about upgrading my mom's computer when I go to visit in about a month. I'm already going to use a slocket to upgrade the slot1 P2 233 CPU to a celeron CPU. She only has about 64 MB of memory in this thing and I am going to upgrade the memory amount too.

My mate has a stick of 128MB ECC reg memory, but I am positive that her mobo does not support ECC or regged memory. So far, all that I read says that ECC memory will work in non ECC memory mode, BUT regged memory will NOT work in boards that do not support regged memory. Is this correct? Nobody seems to have the definitive answer anywhere I looked online.

Upgrading memory in older PCs can be a real pain as only certain types and even brands seem to work sometimes. Try to buy it from someone who will refund you if it doesn't work

Check the speed of the memory too i.e. PC100, PC133 or faster
It is probably only PC100. Also is it DIMM or SIMM?

It's a 66 mhz FSB Diamond Multimedia mobo. It was a last ditch effort for Diamond before they went belly up. PC100 or 133 should work just fine though @ 66mhz. I know it takes regular 168 pin SDRAM, so it shouldn't be too hard. I'm just worried about the stick of ECC memory not working in it. I know the board doesn't support ECC so I am wondering if it will just run as non-ECC or maybe not work at all since it is registered memory. Otherwise, I guess I will be ponying up about $20 more dollars to upgrade it.

I remember having trouble with my old PII. Most of the times, only Double Sided SD RAM chips work. Otherwise, if it is single sides, either only half of the RAM is detected or completely not detected.

Well, I managed to get a non-ECC Micron 128 MB stick on Ebay for $13. That should do the trick nicely.
