On the 23rd of April 2004 Microsoft accidently granted a few beta testers access to various builds that are normally reserved for OEM testers. We can confirm that the build released bears the tag of 6.00.2900.2111 (xpsp.040409-1745).

Other builds that a select few testers were given access to were 2064/2082/2090/2108 and 2077. Microsoft were unavailable for comment regarding the slip up. So far we've not been able to establish anything new with 2111 but we're expecting RC2 to be released on May 12th with the RTM on June 23rd. Current internal builds are at 2117

With reference to SP2 (any build), I have SP2 RC1 2096 installed and I have just read on another forum about a new feature called DEP (Data Execution Prevention) which is accessed by right-clicking on System/Properties/Advanced/Performance settings and there you will see a tab for DEP. This new feature seems really good but when I click on the tab, all the settings are 'grayed-out'.

After going into the HELP file, it turns out that if the settings are unavailable, then you microprocessor does not support DEP software.

My CPU is an Intel 2.40C Ghz 800Mhz P4 and I find it pretty strange that the most famous and most used CPU around, does not support DEP.

Any input on this would be appreciated.

If I am correct DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is one of the features Microsoft were planning to introduce in Longhorn. Essentially it makes use of the NX (No-Execute) Instruction. This allows the OS to mark certain blocks of memory as containing data and not executable code. This will effectively make it impossible to exploit the lack of bounds-checking on server applications in order to gain control of a system (the most common vulnerability).

Currently only AMD's AMD64 has support for the NX instruction. Of course this is probably about to change in the near future. Support for new proccessor features is often present in the Operating System long before they become popular.
