Hey everyone

i've been using windows xp pro now for ages, about 2 years since the installation.

however, it has got that far now that things are driving me mad. its getting slower due to junk entries, and internet explorer has also screwed up.

i have two options: Either install the service pack 1 for it to see if that sorts out the problems, OR

do a complete format and install either Windows 2000 Pro with SP4, or install the XP Pro with SP1 integrated.

I'm basically after the MOST stable environment now. i dont really play computer games at all. but listen to a hell of a lot of music.

any suggestions??

I would suggest you to don't go back. :)

If you haven't already applied the Service Pack 1, then I would strongly recommend you to install it now. Give it ago.

Just wait couple of more months and apply the Service Pack 2 as well.

By the way, everything depends on how easy it is for you to backup your two-year worth of documents.

What are your hard disk configurations? What processor and amount of RAM you have?

Normally, applying a Service Pack give a refresh to the Windows System files and makes Windows run faster. So I would suggest you again to install Service Pack 1. :)

Windows XP is really a good OS for me, no blue screen etc..........Give it another chance

What ~*McoreD*~ says is exactly correct for me as well.
If and when you do a clean install find a program that will do a complete backup of the system after all updates are done and then it won't take but a very short time to get you back to a good operating system again.

Just be sure to update, backup and scan

will give XP sp1 a go and hopefully it wont screw up my system even more :D

its not the data to be honest, cuz i can just transfer that all to my external usb2.0 20gb external HDD just as temporary backup.

its the fact that i've got tonnes of programs on it.

also, i had lots of spyware on my system. i removed it with some software and thats when IE started crashing with 2 or more IE windows open. hopefully sp1 will sort it, if not i'd prefer to format the my love muffin.

oh yeah, my system is an athlon 1.4gh (1600) with 256mb ram and a 40gb hard disk with 64mb 3d card.

You should also consider ordering the free security CD from MS

For such a good system which Windows XP can run flawlessly, I would definitely give SP1 a go.

If I were you, I would install SP2 RC1 ;) to maximize the chances of getting IE6 problems sorted out.

Having not enough freespace i.e less than 300 MB in the hard disk (with Windows) can slow down any computer. So just be sure you have enough free space.


Remove Spyware -- which you have already done
Defragment
Scan
Apply SP1 or SP2 RC1
Check if IE is working properly.

If you are not satisfied, go for the clean install of Windows XP SP1 as you would have done. :)

not much difference in performance though. to be honest i reckon its cuz of all the shite that i had installed. its screwed up the performance over time.

i'm gonna do a thorough backup of my system over a few days and the do a clean install of xp sp1.

Be sure to Unplug your computer from the Internet until you apply the Blaster Work Patch. :)
