I managed to establish a PC-to-PC network between two Windows XP Computers.
(Just ran the Home Networking Wizard -- didn't do anything else wrong).

However, when opening a Network Folder for the first time, the computer almost freezes (ie the Explorer Window) -- even the Pentium 4 3GHz. Actually it is worse in the P4 than in the PII 400MHz.

When opening a Shared Folder of P4 for the first time , via the PII the speed is ok.
But when opening a Shared Folder of PII for the first time, via the P4 it is extremely slow. It takes like 3 ~ 4 minutes to open the shared folder for the first time. However after that, I can press Back|Forward or even close and re-open the folder as usual.

I have this feeling that it is not normal.

I have used this PII to network with an Athlon XP 1700+ and I rememmber there was not much lagging problems. However I didn't have Firewalls in installed in both computers -- at that time. That's the only difference from now.

I have Firewalls installed in the both computers (the same product).
May be this causing the problem?

Please help. I am lost. :(

P.S:
This also happens when the computer is restarted and My Computer (in P4) is opened for the first time.

Thanks dude, it is great that you perfectly understand the problem I have. :)

I ran networkboot.reg successfully. But can you please tell me what to do with the inf file? I changed its extension to reg and tried to add the info to the registry but it is not a valid registry entry file.

Do I need to add it to Windows\INF folder?

Thanks heaps.

You should just right click on it and choose install. If you dont have an install option. Seems to dispear a lot. Think of lots of tweaks faq with it. Then run the attached reg file.

It should repair it. Then open folder options and choose .inf and set install as default. Now there should be an install option or just an open with, like mine that says:

Windows Setup API

I have mine setup that way since its a lot saver. Same with vbscripts .vbs, etc. :)

So once u do that, it does it very fast. Then just restart your computer and hopefully you will be good to go. I have done this three times now and it always fixes it. It if does not then something is probally wrong.

Hi there Will,

I applied the networkboot.reg and the installed the Speed_Sharing_Up.inf in the P4 and restarted.

Everything works as normal now. Thank you very much for your help. :)

(However when I restart it happens again. Not all the times. May be that's why Networked computers are up 24 * 7 to avoid these kind of problems).

Thank again Will,

McoreD
