I just couldn't figure this out. This a.m. I installed a second copy of WinXP on another partition and it works fine. The offending program that keyed me to the failure of the Group Policy snap-in problem (Blackmoon) works perfectly on the new install.

I'll bite the bullet, take 'm both off and do a new install from zero. <groan> Thank goodness for PQRE so that I can do a simple restore of Outlook pst file, ftp favorites and other stuff like that.

Thanks for all your tips

I'm still susicious that the on board Ethernet chip this new P4C800 has may have triggered the problem. The one variable in my little test install of a 2nd WinXP o/s is that I did it with a regular PCI NIC installed. WinXP doesn't have drivers for the onboard ethernet chip. And even tho I can install the drivers after the o/s install, maybe it makes the MMC snap-ins fail in some way. Dunno.

I use PowerQuest Drive Image, which has never let me down. In this present case, it turns out that the initial installation had a fault--and after redoing the install today am even more sure it had something to do with the on board LAN chip. Soon as I get my main proggies on I'll do a PowerQuest Image. and be cool for the next year or so.

I did not mean for that. I just ment for normal backup of like your outlook email, fav, etcs.

I ghost the whole thing but I also, do the registry and my e-mail etc. So if its gets scrwed its a lot easier and most of the time more up to date then having to ghost the whole thing.
