Jessica 6th Jun 02 05:15 AM

hmmm.....7200rpm is the way to go.

Sephiroth 6th Jun 02 05:56 AM

yep, 7200rpm drives are far faster than 5400rpm

Crowdirt 6th Jun 02 07:52 AM

Hi Folks, my experience with Western Digital drives are that they are less reliable than Maxtor/Quantum....Hence the lower price. A low price means lower Speed/lower Reliability/lower Performance over all. Hence "Beware"...:(

Bads 6th Jun 02 03:21 PM

Thanks all for your comments,

I will search for another one who is 7200 rpm

Actually I have an IBM Desktar that I have paid over $300 CDN 1 year ago and this is a 20 gigs 7200 rpm ;)

But I need more space :p

Beta Spanky 6th Jun 02 03:54 PM

Hey Bads, here are some prices from a local store where I live, and they usually compete better than the chain stores. So it looks like you were going to pay way too much for that drive.

HDI IBM 60GB 7200rpm IDE (U100) $88.00
HDI Maxtor 60GB 7200rpm IDE (U133) #6L060J3 $101.50
HDI IBM 80GB 7200rpm IDE (U100) $103.00

Ok,

I have just buy this one :HDI Maxtor 60GB 7200rpm IDE (U133) #6L060J3 $101.50 for $165 CDN

Now I need to install it as master and copy my other drive to this one :glare:

I need this new as master for booting but I need my C Partition on this one, just copy to this one ?

Cactus 7th Jun 02 09:49 PM

Hi Bads1

No, even with your old drive as a master, you can still do the copy. I guess you will be using a program like Ghost or DriveImage. After the copy, just swap the master and slave configuration and all should work well.

Keep in mind that copying of FAT16 partitions can't be done on partitions that are larger then 2048 Mb, but I guess noone is still using FAT16 anymore.

Cheers,
Cactus

Thanks Le Cactus

I'm using NTFS and Drive Image for copying the HD

1- I install my second HD as slave

2- I copy my HD to the other one

3- I change master and slave jumper and my new HD will boot ?

If I'm wrong let me know

Thanks

Cactus 7th Jun 02 10:39 PM

Hi,

Well, it always works when I do that. I'm using Gohost for it, but I can't think of any reason why Drive Image wouldn't do the job.

Go right ahaed, it will work . . .

Cheers
Cactus

Bads 7th Jun 02 11:59 PM

I will try now and I come back later :D

I also cross my fingers :D

Cactus 8th Jun 02 12:02 AM

Will do that to.

But remember, you always got you original drive. Even if it fails, you can fall back on that and have another go on it. Now go for it!

Problems :(

I just install my new HD and it said 32 go for a 60 go ???

How can I correct this ?

Thanks

Cactus 8th Jun 02 12:47 AM

Hi Bads, now that s*cks!

What is saying your HD is only 32 Gb. Your OS or your BIOS?

If it's the OS I guess Drive Image doesn't let you copy your drive onto a bigger one with enlarging the partition in the process. If it's your BIOS I guess the translation goes wrong somewhere.

If it's a DriveImage proble, you could solve it by using PartitionMagic, or do the copy again with Symantec Ghost. The BIOS problem should be solved (of course) by changing the setting for your drive in the BIOS. That will make the drive unreadable, so you'll have to do the copy again

Cheers,
Cactus

kernel 8th Jun 02 12:52 AM

hi bads 1,

just my 2 cents

maybe your bios cannot read hd larger than 32 gb

so upgrade your bios, if possible

have a nice day
kernel

Bads 8th Jun 02 01:24 AM

I just go to the maxtor website and I have to set an extra jumper to break the 32 go limitation.

I install the jumper and my Promise card see the HD as 32 go (this card can accept HD over 128 go) so I don't understand now

I don't install the HD from the Bios because of my Promise card

Cactus 8th Jun 02 01:28 AM

Can the Bios of your promise card be to old? And can it be upgraded?

Cheers
Cactus

My friend has had 4 WD hard drives, and all four have died on him.

BearCat 20th Jun 02 12:13 AM

@Crowdirt
My experience, both personal and in my line of work, telles me the opposite...

I have seen ton's of Maxtors/Quanums/IBMs gone bad, and only ONCE for the last 15
years I have seen a WD *trying* to go bad, but my SMART sensor told
me before it was to late, so I was able to save all my data on it ( 120GB )

The 60GB/5400 drives mentioned in the first post, is a very good drive. I have 2 of them,
and they have been running for allmost 1,5 years now, with hardly
any break's :) Even if they are "only" 5400, the data density on the plates
makes it faster than expected ( access time ), and in test's
they outperformed many 7200 drives when they where first released.

And a nice added feature, is very little noice :)

Cheer's

all drives will have issues.
sometime have to depend on how they are shipped.
the ppl that are moving the boxes will just throw it around, even though there are proection measures, they dun help much.

so it still depends on luck, you may just get a bad drive even if the reviews are good.
