Audio gets screwed up when playing games w/ the GeForce2
It was fine w/ voodoo3.

Now, the audio pops/scratchs/skips. When I listen to MP3s and try to play a game at the same time, the mp3 slows down and does the stuff i said.

It must be the GeForce2 messing w/ the audio somehow.

AMD XP 1600
256DDR
60GB
SiS 7012 (built in) Audio (latest drivers)
GeForce2 MX200 (latest detonatoer drivers) PCI
Also using the dx8.1

The Game is Civ3, GTA3, Spider-Man. They all do it :(.
I havnet tried the Sims yet (mainly because i'm waiting for a patch for Vacation)
....hmmm......
anything else?

anyway....any ideas?

Stringent 29th May 02 10:37 AM

What sound card is it and what O/S you got?

chrisa107 29th May 02 03:37 PM

If the Geforce is in a PCI slot, try switching its slots. I had to do this to fix the scratching and hissing noises from my Sound Blaster. It probably won't work, but it is something to try.

Jessica 29th May 02 08:28 PM

oh..forgot to say my OS
WinXP Pro.
I put my audio card there.
SiS7012 (built in)

The thing about switching slots....i cant.

The cable from the monitor that goes into the vid. card is VERY short. And barely reaches the top most PCI slot. In fact..i have to have my computer deeper under my desk (closer to wall) to get it to barely reach. So...then I'd have to buy an extension cable....they make those right?

And why do u say it might not work? IT worked for you, yes?

chrisa107 30th May 02 02:05 PM

It worked for me, but I do have different hardware in my system - AGP Geforce2 Pro and a Soundblaster Live 5.1. It's something having to do with the interference caused when the two cards are close together, but it varies by system. What I would do is just temporarily move your monitor to right next to your system, switch the slots, see if it works, and if it (hopefully) does, get an extension.

kamikazee 31st May 02 07:51 AM

Ok try this, may work In run type dxdiag and then goto the sound tab, turn the sound hardware acceleration down see if this helps......

just_do_IT 31st May 02 05:03 PM

I also have the geforce 2 and the soundblaster live 5.1 .

What was happening with me was my computer would just completely re-boot. It was the strangest thing i ever saw.

What I eventually did was remove all devices from my computer. Then I added them one by one till I got the problem to repeat its self.

That is a last resort.

Jessica 31st May 02 05:09 PM

..ok...

Now I was watchin a movie....and the sound messes up watching a movie too.

its *FINE* in windows. and in some games.

But games w/ movie scenes or while i'm watching a movie clip the sound gets all jacked.

I honestly dont see why this would be happening.
I mean....isnt a geforce 2 (pci/agp) supposed to be better than any voodoo3 period?

Dammit. :(

Maybe I'll just buy a new soundcard. Some cheapy soundblaster. Its GOTTA be better than what i'm running now, right? :D

..hey....that kinda worked. It doesnt mess up as bad (only tried the movie 'test') will try the games later.

can u explain why?

;edit;
ok...i tried Civ3 ...nope no worky :(

I'll get a cheapy soundblaster today. And see if that does anything. If not.....who's gonna send me an agp geforce2+ ?? :D

kamikazee 31st May 02 07:19 PM

and No the geforce is not better than than voodoo IMHO, I believe they would still be playing catch-up if voodoo was still around...I believe the The voodoo 5 5500 is still the best card around at this point in time, just no driver support......

..i had a VOodoo3..not a 5.
16MB.

Now a Geforce2 32MB.

Is it not better?

Anyway..

i just got a new soundcard put in. A cheap ass $15 one.
ANd it still fucks up.

ugh...ok
i'm gonna format *again* (i just did like 2 weeks ago)
...get rid of old drivers and what not.
And check it again. :-(
Anyone know where else I can go for info on this?
I tried the manufactuer of my geforce..but..ugh..the form u gotta fill out is SOOOOo long.

......uGH
i formatted .......using the XP drivers for everything. Had to get the drivers thru the MS thing.
And ITS STILL DOES IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kamikazee 1st Jun 02 04:53 AM

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=pg_20010907751234, been reading in a few other places try the 28.32 drivers some have had success with these.....
http://www.viahardware.com/download/index.shtm#4in1...
Others have found the problem being related to the power supply

Jessica 1st Jun 02 04:58 AM

yeah..i upgraded to 28.32 also.
Nothing.

Upgraded to the ones from the manufactuer..same thing.

kamikazee 1st Jun 02 05:08 AM

Jessica 1st Jun 02 05:57 AM

kamikazee 3rd Jun 02 07:03 AM

Jessica 3rd Jun 02 09:20 AM

There games/MP3s on my HD.

Raid762 3rd Jun 02 10:26 AM

I'm running XP pro , GF2-mx400 and an ESS1938 based soundcard , no problems here except the CPU running out of grunt , only a k62-500. , Try a clean install approach and go from there , After a clean install my machine plays DVD /VCD and games much better , things can just get too messy.

Have you tried this fix yet?

GTA 3 WINDOWS XP FIX

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're running Windows XP & an nVIDIA based graphics card (and possibly some other brands) with GTA3:PC and experiencing problems, then don't worry! There's some important information in the 'readme' file of the CD. Here's the important snippet.

"We have found a possible problem with Windows XP that manifests itself as graphical problems both in the game menu and also during game play. We have traced this problem to be a Windows XP problem. Technically this problem is solved by the use of a newer version of d3d8.dll than is shipped on CD with Windows XP. (The version on the Windows XP CD that has problems is 5.1.26000.0 ? versions tested without error include 5.1.2600.15 and 5.1.2600.29)
Currently the only way we know to update this dll file is to install the Windows XP Patch: "The Computer Cannot Enter Standby or Hibernate if a Direct3D-Based Screen Saver Is Running (Q306676)" downloadable from here.
This update may in the future be available as part of an official Windows XP Service Pack, a Windows XP Compatibility Update, or possibly a DirectX 8.1 update."

IF U HAVE ANY TROUBLES WITH THE GAME RUNNING WITH WINDOWS XP get this patch below to fix it

Jessica 9th Jun 02 04:41 PM

yeah, but its not just GTA3.
Its a lot of games and even when I try watchin a video clip or something and listen to MP3s.

kamikazee 9th Jun 02 10:34 PM

The makers of gta3 are passing the buck, although the game may be good, it is sh*t as far as running on any computer, this is not only happening on xp but all other OS's as well, they just don't want to fix it, the makers, Rockstar, just don't want to fix it or admit it is their problem....It is also the Same with EA games and MOHAA, it runs fine until you patch it to 1.11, then you get a lock-up...well that has been blamed on c-media, when the one thing everyone has in common is the ifeel mouse by logitech, or any forcefeedback mouse using the immersion software....how was this determined?? through forums like this

Beta Master 11th Jun 02 12:47 AM

Some VIA Chipset cause these kinds of trouble , check you bios for latency thing ; and try a greater value for latency .

FreeUS 12th Jun 02 04:05 AM

I dont know if that help, but check my post here: [link]http://www.betaone.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30663[/link]

its not a VIA
Its an SIS

the ECS K7S5A motherboard.

Sephiroth 12th Jun 02 06:19 PM

I had this same problem with my VIA chipset for a long long time and it took me forever to fix. Try putting your video card into the first PCI slot and the sound card into the last slot so that it is as far away from the CPU / RAM banks as possible. Then check your BIOS for any settings that have to do with PCI Latency or PCI Read / Write Caching and enable them. If you have one that is PCI Latency Timer and you have to tell it a number try setting it to 32 first, and if that doesn't help, try changing it to 64. There is a patch @ [link]www.viahardware.com[/link] that fixes this exact same problem with VIA chipsets but I don't know if there is one avalible for SIS chipsets or not.

Edit. Also update your motherboard's BIOS to the newest one avalible. You can get the BIOS and the flasher from ECS's website and you can get a DOS bootdisk (if you don't have one) from [link]www.bootdisk.com[/link]

QuietlyCrazed 18th Jun 02 05:26 PM

Jessica -- Howdy. I have a similar setup on one of my other puters -- and the solution provided by Sephiroth worked for my setup. Do you have the bios update from ECS? That helped a little before I decided to start moving things around. The other thing that the company I bought the system from told me is that some of the power suppplies have been known to cause interference -- I whined and bitched and they were kind enough to send me a new one.

Hopefully you can get this straightened out. If you need more info -- drop me a PM. I would be happy to help out if I can.

Jessica 20th Jun 02 06:46 AM

thanks crazed

..we gave up..and just put in the Voodoo3 again :)
savin up for another GeForce(something) AGP.

what a waste, huh :(?

Sephiroth 20th Jun 02 08:38 AM

get a geforce 4mx agp card, only 100 bucks where i live, and very powerful, of course not as powerful as the ti versions of the geforce 4 but you'll still get much more than a geforce 2 :)

skloo77 21st Jun 02 02:29 AM

GTA3 has no issues running on Win2K Pro with just 16MB of video ram from Matrox G400.

skloo77 21st Jun 02 03:19 AM

since u back with your Voodoo3, and using XP. Refer to this posted by NICOS on Great Voodoo3 Drivers for XP.
