Seeing the post by .unicorn in Software Support, I thought we should start something similar for Linux.
Our Linux fans: please go ahead guys... :)

Personally I am still a newbie to Linux and I hope I will learn a lot in this thread and so will our other friends. As in the "Recommended Software" thread in Software Support, the first post will be the most updated list everytime.

Cool thread. I second cratyc's nomation of Xandros. It is REALLY a snap to install. the LAN, remote printer sets up easily. All disk drives mount automatically. My favorite distro. Version 1.1 is the latest and 2.0 is in beta. Should be an exciting release.

I'm trying to configure this server right now still a relative linux newbie only been using it since R.H 7 but I'm running Fedora Core right now anyway got the server running but the permissions are pretty narrow. I have read the RTFM several times and either I'm missing something or just don't quite understand what I'm doing. I was really wondering if there is a not too technical manual I could look at or some kind of tutorial where I can learn more about permissions for users.

For the average user Xandros 2.0 - stunning distro. For those looking for the utmost support re hardware driver issues - use Mandrake. Test drive by using the live Mandrake CD just made available.

antivirus for linux

I don't know if there is a virus for linux, but this puppy from BitDefender could come in andy when in your linux box share file with a windows box

link: http://www.bitdefender.com/index.php?tab=2

products:

x Linux Mail Server Protection

x Linux File Server Protection <- bit defender for samba

x LinuxDefender <- A Linux distro complete with BitDefender tools on a bootable CD

x BitDefender Linux Edition <- Complete virus defense solution designed for easy virus prevention on Linux systems

x BitDefender Web Installer <- Download bitdefender for linux by iussing this command from a console (U must be logged as root)
Code:

wget -q -O - http://linux.bitdefender.com/webinstall.sh | sh
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------//-------

Then U could run this from a cron job:

Ex 1)
updating:
put a file called update (with permission set to 755) in /etc/cron.daily/
Code:

marco@apollo ~ $ cat /etc/cron.daily/update
#! /bin/sh

nice -n 10 /opt/BitDefender/bdc/bdc --update

Ex 2)

CraftyC is the best Linux guy on BetaONE. Not doubts and he is a Gentoo guy.

Putting my mouth where my keyboard is, I tried Ubuntu and then put Xandros 3.0 Deluxe back on. It is working flawlessly on my Toshiba Satellite 5100. I intalled Skype (linux version) and just tested it with a 30 minute landline telephone call to my Italy based daughter. Perfect. With Xandros, everything works, including the shared printer over the MS network with my desktop. Maybe I'm missing something, but I could never achieve the ease of configuration with other distros that Xandros gives out of the box.

Sheesh. This is an ancient thread. Dunno how I got it up on my screen. I'm going to be accused again of just waking up from a long winter's sleep. :) And, welcome to the new world. Anyway my experience is pertinent for Linux and I hope there are others taking a new look. :)
