italiano 23rd Jul 03 06:42 AM

I have always kept this product up to date etc.

A few days back a horrible virus got into my system, this damn b$%$%$ (started deleting stuff and modifying my system etc )

Norton didn't detect it.

Because my system was playing up, I installed another antivirus (pc-cillin and it detected a nasty virus. I restarted my computer again, but by then there was nothing that I could do, my system folder including fonts management had been totally screwed....

I couldnt read anything, all the fonts had been changed to strange shapes, I could not access any program or file ?????

My only option was to do a complete format and back up ??

I have lost lots of stuff etc because of Norton's inability to find/detect viruses properly.

I have been doing a lot of changes etc lately, and my back up image was not up to date (1 month old)...

So lots of things have gone forever, including email addresses, internet links, programs, settings etc etc...

I am not a happy man at all :(

I thought I would let you guys know so that I could vent my frustrations off my chest

Oh well,

here's to a lot of work !!!!

I won't be using Norton products again.....

rikytik 23rd Jul 03 08:58 AM

Few things worse than what you've gone through here, Italiano. Sorry to hear it. I have relied on Norton for a numger o years. Be interesting to see reactions to your experience from other B1 memgers.

Lesson taken, thought. I just made a new back up image!

Keru 23rd Jul 03 09:57 AM

realy sad to hear what happened italiano :(

me have ditched norton for a little more than a year now
have been using NOD32 lately n feel comfy wid it ;)

Dudelive 23rd Jul 03 01:05 PM

I am really sad to hear what happened also italiano.

I also am with Keru and have changed to NOD32 and I got rid of McAfee and it was the best move that I could have made.

Now I know there are going to be others that feel MUCH different than you and I and that is what I like about this place we all can feel different and still get along

Sorry about your troubles but that teachs us all to backup, backup, backup

This is sad, I've always used norton products, can't we email them a feedback and complain?

italiano 23rd Jul 03 03:06 PM

Thanks guys....

I think that will give NOD32 :)

Also, I have learnt my lesson...

ALWAYS take regular backups <_<

Thanks again!!!

You never know, when the 2004 Nortons are out of beta I may give them a go :P

Fisher 23rd Jul 03 03:26 PM

I also use norton antivirus corp and one day it didn't detect any virus either and it ruined all my programs.

Bads 23rd Jul 03 05:32 PM

Nice lesson,

I'm using norton + the antivirus from Ontrack System Suite ;)

Never had problem

billybob3 23rd Jul 03 06:21 PM

This reminds me of when I learned the "backup" method. A company that I work for never told me that the backup wasn't happening anymore. So, one day I was doing something to the server, it required a restart, and I restarted, and the partition tables became corrupt. Assuming, that they still had a backup, I didn't think anything of it. Then they told me, it hadn't been backing up....for 3 MONTHS!!!! Ya, that sucked.

As for Norton, i'm always having problems with it.

horseman54 23rd Jul 03 07:15 PM

Norton has let viruses in on me also and changed to the virus scanner in OnTrack.

gazman 23rd Jul 03 08:49 PM

Yeh the same thing happend to me a while back when i was running norton 2003 i clicked on this doom3 nocd exe i got from the net and it nearly destroyed most of my system and norton didnt even pick it up,so i installed another brand like you did and it picked it up straight away,so yeh noton makes you wonder allthough i like nortons firewall its really easy to use.

Fisher 23rd Jul 03 09:38 PM

Yes, the Notron Firewall is the best.

Seducer 24th Jul 03 05:10 AM

havent got any problem with norton and been using this for 7 years now. i remember there was time that i was hit by a localy made virus, luckily it was not that destructive and easily remove but this is not the fault of norton since the virus def table is not updated.

sad to hear happened to you italiano.....

mikeh420 24th Jul 03 06:01 AM

I have been using NAV since V1.0 (DOS). The only problem I have had has been only after I installed it on XP; after a few months, the scheduled scan stops working, something about 'rights' to a file. After re-installing it, it works fine again. I am using NAV 2004 Beta and haven't had a virus on any of my PCs, except for one time I got W32.HLLW.Qaz.A. after which I got Norton Personal Firewall. Symantec comes out with the new virus defs fast enough, that if you do get infected, chances are you are behind in the updates.

What is NOD?

Right now I use Norton Anti-Virus Corporate (education copy). Should I switch?

just_do_IT 24th Jul 03 11:58 PM

New definitions for viruses come out daily. I wouldnt put total blame on Norton, as they can only update as they become aware.

Best thing you can do is backup your data on a set schedule. But even then you could end up backing up a virus inadertantly and thats no good either.

Sorry to hear of your troubles :(

~*McoreD*~ 25th Jul 03 01:11 PM

I am very sorry to hear that italiano. :(

I am also a Norton AntiVirus user. I have got a question for ya. Are you used to run your computer as an Administrator all the time? And is your harddisk formatted as NTFS?
...assuming that you are using Windows 2000/XP. :)

McoreD

italiano 25th Jul 03 01:16 PM

The answer to both your questions friend is:

Yes

Yes

I am running XP PRO

Why the question ?? :)

Stringent 25th Jul 03 01:30 PM

I have noticed some of you run applications that you obtain from the web, don't you stick them through the scanner first before executing them?

I have NAV Corporate Ed and haven't had a problem.

If its a brand new virus, there isn't much they can do.

~*McoreD*~ 25th Jul 03 02:06 PM

3 Questions sorry. The last questions were added up later. :D

So you have run your computer under Administrator account.

Why you should not run your computer as an administrator
Running Windows 2000 or Windows XP as an administrator makes the system vulnerable to Trojan horses and other security risks. The simple act of visiting an Internet site can be extremely damaging to the system. An unfamiliar Internet site may have Trojan horse code that can be downloaded to the system and executed. If you are logged on with administrator privileges, a Trojan horse could do things like reformat your hard drive, delete all your files, create a new user account with administrative access, and so on.

You should add yourself to the Users or Power Users group. When you log on as a member of the Users group, you can perform routine tasks, including running programs and visiting Internet sites, without exposing your computer to unnecessary risk. As a member of the Power Users group, you can perform routine tasks and you can also install programs, add printers, and use most Control Panel items. If you need to perform administrative tasks, such as upgrading the operating system or configuring system parameters, then log off and log back on as an administrator.

If you frequently need to log on as an administrator, you can use the runas command to start programs as an administrator. For more information, see To start programs as an administrator.

DaMaster 31st Jul 03 05:47 PM

Oh.....thats why you shouldn't log in as admin, I finally get to know, Thanks ~*McoreD*~ :D

italiano 31st Jul 03 06:43 PM

I have all my settings etc under Administrator.

How can I set up a power user account and at the same time keep all my settings etc?

Is there a way of transferring all my settings to the new account??

Thanks

italiano :)

James55 15th Aug 03 11:48 PM

Sorry to hear but Ive not had to worry about virus since I started using norton. Viruses have slipped by most every other program Ive used. Of course none of these programs can guarantee that some smart ass wont write a virus that gets by somtime but when a new one comes out Ive found that symantec is very quick to come up with updates or solutions.

Windows XP needs at least two administrators. So in User Accounts create another administrator account and make change your exisisting (italiano) user account to Limited Account. :)

italiano 16th Aug 03 07:19 AM

Thanks McoreD

Will do !!
