hi
does anybody know which of the different linux operating systems is the best is there a site like betaone for linux as well thanks |
I prefer Mandrake 8.2 although Red Hat 7.2 is good. I here that SUSE 8 is supposed to be brilliant, although I haven't tried it myself.
www.linuxnewbie.org (click on the discussion button) Hope this helps. |
Depends on what you need and like ?
I like Slackware but it doesnt do anything for sure you have to get your hands dirty for it. :D |
Debian
|
love suse now on 8.0 i like it but mandrake was oke for me too
|
1 - Mandrake
2 - RedHat 3 - Slackware |
Advice - dont use bestlinux
Its one of the first I tried... Its incredibly slow compared to other distros, its outdated, etc.... Mandrake is nice... and I tried the Suse liveval CD and that rocks... A whole distro you can boot and run of the CD... no harddisk required (although if you dont have a fat32 partition any changes you make in linux are lost on restart) |
I prefer RedHat, currently released 7.3 which is quite good.
To be honest I haven't tried any of the others. Just pick one of the most popular distributions and try it! |
I installed SuSE Pro v.8 and it set up amazing easy. Although i got an internet connection through me 4 port LinkSys router ok, I couldn't get it to "see" the LAN, nor could the LAN see this machine, although the DHCP table showed the Linux machine. I guess there is still a configuration procedure I need to figure out.
Perhaps I shall try Red Hat 7.3 and see how that does. |
Wish i could buy a new computer!! :(

--with removable hd slots!

what about the latest lindows??
windows in linux?? any comments |
Changed my mind. It's Gentoo all the way. It's a source-based distro and it's not the easiest distro in the world, but I like it a lot.
|
Just installed Mandrake 8.2. Pretty cool so far. EAsy config, at least for internet conection through my router.
|
I couldn't seem to figure out how to configure the LAN with Mandrake 8.2
SuSE has a configuration utility, but I'm not having any success seeing the LAN, even tho I am hooked up to the 4 port router, access it's setup screen and internet connection. |
Red Hat all the way - I had that and mandrake, have'nt tried suse yet, but from Red Hat and Mandrake - it is diff Red hat for me.
|
Anybody on this thread using their machine on a lan?
Just installed Red Hat 7.3 and see it has evern better netword configuration utilities, but I still haven't figured it out. :) |

There is a networking how-to you can follow. Go to [link]www.tldp.org[/link] and search for "networking". |
Terrific resource, crafyc. My Linux education is going to take more reading than I figured. :) Thannks for this source.

Slackware 8.1 just came out, I understand. fxp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-8.1-iso/. Can't seem to log on their ftp, must be busy. Any opinions about Slackware?
|
Anybody's interested Slackware 8.1 is just out and most of the servers are busy busy. Here's a link with a bunch of sites.

See what you mean about needing help with Slackware Cartman.
I don't know enough yet about commands and couldn't get installation started so I went to SuSE 8.0. Man, this is the slickest installation of all I've tried so far: Caldera 3.1.1; RedHat 7.3 (my most unfavorite) Mandrake 8.2 Think I'll stop here with this dual boot setup and get used to it. Gotta figure out how to get it to recognize the LAN, which must be a pretty simple problem. (I hope) |
I really like SuSE 8.0, but I still can't figure out how to configure so I can "see" the LAN. Otherwise, installed Star Office 6, got the KMail working great and swinging along.
There's no way that Uncle Willy is in danger. Windows XP is just to fantastic to abandon. But Linux has gone a long way in a LONG time, but surprising when you consider the financial base--or lack thereof. |

You can find it at samba.netfilter.org. Again there should be a how-to on it at [link]www.tldp.org.[/link] Hope this helps. |
Thanks crafyc, Looking over the How to now.
