hi there all i have a little problem with a laptop top the operating system is xp home
the problem you click on any exe, shortcut that lead to a program is opens up with note pad i have checked the file system to see if the open with has been changed but is has not checked to see if there is a virus on but all seem ok with scan (pc-cillin2003) im lost can any one got any idea im lost many thnx :) |
Odd.
In Explorer, Tools, The most bottom option about filetypes, check in the list if EXE is listed in the column with extensions. If it is there just delete it as EXE-files normally aren't listed there (as they normally aren't supposed to be opened by something else). Apart from that I don't know. |
do you mean exe's themselves, or shortcuts? if it's EXE's, try what unicorn said, if it's shortcuts, try the same, but replace EXE with LNK
|
Just in case - you might want to go here and try their on-line virus checker-

I use norton for my AV
But for online scans, http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp |

Sound like a viiri after all.
I have found two other possible solutions for you: 1: Code:
Copy and paste the bold text below to notepad and save as exefix.reg. Double click on it to merge with the registry, It will repair your altered .exe file association. Run a full system scan afterwards. Code:
Just run this YahaRegfix.com tool offered by Solo Antivirus. It will fix the registry entries. You can get it from the link www.srnmicro.com/downloads/YahaRegFix.com After that you can run all .EXE files Do you happen to have installed Winamp 2.9x recently? |
