It's quite natural for economies to go through ups and downs. Look at how fast the economy, stock market, etc. grew in the 90's. Only makes sense that things would slow up a bit for a while. I, for one, prefer not to have runaway inflation like we did in a couple decades ago. And while many people do suffer in a slow economy, many other positive things do happen. Shit, look at how many millions of people are saving a lot of dough by re-financing their homes at these low interest rates, for example.

Your other point about people taking the process more seriously is a point well taken. I, too, wish that more people voted and do other things to get more involved. But another way of looking at voter apathy is to consider that people are content with how things are. The Democrat and Republican parties are quite similar in much of what they stand for. Sure, there are some ideological differences on how big the role of the federal government in our lives should be, but in so many areas the parties do agree on things.

Agreed. We are talking about serious drugs which destroy peoples lives, often leading them to a life of crime to support their habbits. Do you really want these substances to be legally availible in local bars/supermarkets/wherever? Personal choice is one thing, but junkies often destroy more than their own lives.

I agree as well. I am not pro-drug legalization, but think about this:

Alcohol causes just as many (if not more) social problems as drugs do. Alcohol comes in many different strengths - beer, hard stuff. Kinda like pot; cocaine.

Maybe it is time to legalize "some" types of narcotics, sell them in a controlled environment and allow the government to reap the money generated by the taxes collected.

So when you steal a car and don't go to jail but use Pot ( I personally don't , but I have tried it before) and you go to Jail that is wrong. I know they say Pot is a gateway drug. We have a Medical Pot law here. So I think that we should reverse it an put the Car thives, and people doing the home invasions in jail and give the tickets to pot users. TThere is a differnce I don't belive in Leaglizing pot just decriminalize its use. Do'nt fill up our prisions and waste court and cops time with paperwork for pot users, save for protection of our families, our property and our way of life.

Yes, the country is in a quandry and it is very much due to the voodoo economics of the republican party. It has been proved time and again that giving tax breaks to the rich only puts more money into their bank accounts - not into the economy. Give the tax breaks to the people who really fuel the economy - the middle class. Let poorer people keep all of their hard earned money from day one.
Also, if you haven't noticed, our constitutional rights are slowly being eroded from beneath us. Read the Patriot act which John Ashcroft wants to make permanent.
The CIA and FBI and other agencies have unprecedented rights to tap your phone and even check out which books you borrow from the Library. Yes indeed, this country is in deep right now and we need someone who will not waffle on his beliefs or bow before the special interests. It is time that government for the people by the people was returned to the people.
Decriminalize does not mean legalize. It means helping people rather than jailing them. No, I don't want people walking down to the corner store to get heroin or other narcotics. I also don't believe these people should be filling up our prisons. There are way too many innocent people in our prisons now. Legal drugs should be regulated in the same manner that cigarettes and alcohol are - age restrictions, etc...

One more thing - I am not trying to be cute. I really wish I had a snowballs chance in hell of actually getting on the ballot and winning the election. As for illegals being a large part of our prison population - they should be incarcerated in their home countries. America taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for them. Drug users shouldn't be imprisoned at all. The drug war is one of the biggest farces in our lifetimes. It is no more effective than prohibition was and costs thousands of lives yearly because it is illegal. If you legalize marijuana and other other non hardcore drugs then you collect taxes rather than spend taxes. You take the criminal element out of it and hence the theft, murder, etc... that go along with it. The cost to our society for this one thing is astronomical and growing daily. How many lives must be lost and how many more ruined by a criminal record? For smoking pot? For using acid? For wanting to enjoy your life the way you want to enjoy it?
Yes, addicts definitely effect more than just themselves. My father and my step father were both alcoholics - believe me, I know how an addict can affect a family, coworkers and friends. They will be addicts whether the substances are legal or not. That is already more than self evident in our society. Compare crime rates and imprisonment in this country to the Netherlands. You might have your eyes opened to the true cost to society of a failed program like the war on drugs. So much more could be done to benefit society with the money we waste on that war and with the income we could generate by legalizing and controlling it.
How much would we save in dollars and human costs if we no longer were to concentrate police, courts and prisons on jailing people for getting high?
That space and that money should be used for true criminals - such as car thieves, killers, robbers and more.
