which proram is good for playing a movie or a dvd with linux ........................is ther any program anyway

craftyc 12th Apr 02 07:27 PM

Check out h**p://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/linux/index.html for a few good DVD Players. I personally reccomend VideoLAN, although I hear that LiViD is supposed to be quite good (may check it out).

Hope this helps.

If you need install instructions just come back here and post.

CARTMAN 12th Apr 02 09:39 PM

Xine! h**p://xine.sourceforge.net i can play encrypted dvds via libcss.

craftyc 14th Apr 02 01:26 PM

LiViD isn't that wonderful. You can't watch DVD's in fullscreen!!!

craftyc 18th Apr 02 07:29 PM

CARTMAN how do you manage to play encrypted DVD's? I have installed libcss but they still won't play.

CARTMAN 19th Apr 02 07:24 AM

If you use xine you have to check Captain CSS plugin for xine and compile it for Xine then you can play encrypted DVDs. For more info http://debianlinux.net/captain_css.html

Cheers cartman

craftyc 19th Apr 02 10:34 AM

I have installed the latest version of Xine along with the Captain CSS plugin. Now I get the error "xine: error while loading shared libraries: libpng.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". Any ideas?

CARTMAN 19th Apr 02 12:45 PM

Well that means you dont have libpng installed go www.rpmfind.net and search for libpng and download the latest mandrake one...

Cheers cartman

craftyc 19th Apr 02 01:01 PM

According to rpminst everything is already installed.

CARTMAN 19th Apr 02 03:36 PM

Then try this

find / -name "libpng*"

as root paste the results so we can see whats going on...

Cheers cartman

craftyc 19th Apr 02 04:49 PM

This is what is happening.

[maarut@pc-62-31-131-213-mo maarut]$ su root
Password:
[root@pc-62-31-131-213-mo maarut]# find / -name libpng.so.2
find: /mnt/cdrom: Input/output error
find: /mnt/cdrom2: Input/output error
[root@pc-62-31-131-213-mo maarut]#

CARTMAN 19th Apr 02 07:53 PM

Well why dont you do this as i said :)
find / -name "libpng.so*"

:) Now post again dude...

craftyc 20th Apr 02 12:12 AM

Sorry. Here you go.

[maarut@pc-62-31-131-213-mo guarddog-1.9.6]$ su root
Password:
[root@pc-62-31-131-213-mo guarddog-1.9.6]# find / -name "libpng.so*"
/usr/lib/libpng.so.3.1.2.1
/usr/lib/libpng.so.3
/usr/lib/libpng.so
find: /mnt/floppy: Input/output error
find: /mnt/cdrom2: Input/output error
[root@pc-62-31-131-213-mo guarddog-1.9.6]#

CARTMAN 20th Apr 02 03:15 PM

Do a ln -s /usr/lib/libpng.so /usr/lib/libpng.so.2

then try again.

Cheers cartman

craftyc 20th Apr 02 04:10 PM

I get this error.

[maarut@pc-62-31-131-213-mo maarut]$ xine

I've downgraded to xine 0.9.8. It's all working now. But I am still haveing difficulty in playing DVD's.

CARTMAN 20th Apr 02 07:49 PM

Well this is because you got a pre-compiled xine which is compiled for another system try to compile xine from source and you will get no errors like that but beware xine compiling can be shitty....

Done. Can you tell me how to play DVD's. It still doesn't work.

CARTMAN 21st Apr 02 06:57 PM

Still got libpng error ?

craftyc 21st Apr 02 08:45 PM

No.

CARTMAN 21st Apr 02 08:49 PM

Well if you dont tell me the error how am I supposed to solve it ? :-)

craftyc 22nd Apr 02 06:26 PM

I click on the d5d button and press play. Then Xine closes.

CARTMAN 22nd Apr 02 06:34 PM

Well execute from terminal and tell me the message and xine looks for /dev/dvd for your dvd device you can change in xine configuration screen. That might be the problem.

craftyc 22nd Apr 02 06:44 PM

This is what I get from when I press play:

dvd_reader: opening /dev/dvd...
dvd_reader: reset drive
dvd_reader: authenticate drive
dvd_reader: authenticate title
GetTitleKey failed: Input/output error
dvd_reader: decrypt title key...
dvd_reader: encrypted
xine-panel: PLAY
xine_play: xine open dvd5://, start pos = 0, start time = 0 (sec)
dvd_reader: opening /dev/dvd...
dvd_reader: reset drive
dvd_reader: authenticate drive
dvd_reader: authenticate title
GetTitleKey failed: Input/output error
dvd_reader: decrypt title key...
dvd_reader: encrypted
xine: using input plugin >d5d< for this MRL (dvd5://).
demux_mpeg_block: mrl dvd5:// is new, will estimated bitrate
xine: using demuxer plugin >MPEG_BLOCK< for this MRL.
metronom: video stream start...
Segmentation fault

The configuration is correct.

CARTMAN 22nd Apr 02 07:32 PM

I think this is a bug because it gives a segmantation fault you better subscribe to xine-dev mailing list @ xine.sf.net and tell them your problem...

craftyc 22nd Apr 02 10:25 PM

OK. Thanks for your help CARTMAN. Just out of interest where did you learn everything about Linux from?
