Been using McAfee AntiSpam 4 for some months and find it is about 70% effective. I've got an installation used by a musician who posts on a number of boards and is getting more than 100 spams a day. McAfee used to be very effective, but spammers are finding ways to beat the stock definitions.
Got any "Rave" antispam proggies to suggest? |
I can't wait to hear some feedback. I'm using I Hate Spam for Outlook and I'm wondering if it will ever "learn" anything.
|
btw, my sister, the "installation" I spoke of bought a copy of "Mail Wiper" and is quite pleased with the results so far. http://www.mailwiper.com/
Still looking for some input on this thread. Surprised there isn't more interest. Spam is getting intense. I always thought I was adequately endowed to reproduce myself, but according to the spam I recieve this is not so. I guess things have changed since I was a young man and enjoyed a rather nice and, I thought, normal, relationship with my wife of 40 years. <ha ha> Maybe we should turn this into a Chit Chat thread. :) |
I agree with source. I Hate Spam (OE) isn't very intuitive, and there's got to be something better out there. Thanks for starting this thread, I'll be watching it with interest.

I was using I Hate Spam for Outlook and tried Mailfrontier's Matador. So far so good, lot less headache than I Hate and it is doing a better job as well. I am using it with the Outlook 2003 beta 2 release and am very please thus far.

Here's what my sister says about Mail Wipe that she recently bought
Mail Wiper works on an entirely different principle than all the other antispam pgms. So far it has gotten 100% for me since I installed it. Ended up by the last time I went on line last night over 120spams had been intercepted by MailWiper yesterday. Around 40 this morn with first check in. Listen to the radio program interview on the MailWiper web site I mentioned. It describes the difference in the approach. It's only been commercially available since Feb so not a lot of people know about it yet. Most of the spams that were getting through "iHateSpam" were porno and I am delighted I do not have to read even their objectionable subject lines to get rid of them. Let you know what happens over some time. Anybody else got ideas? The web site she refers to is http://www.mailwiper.com |

Gonna give those 2 a try Flanderz.
If you have time the broadcast recorded on http://www.mailwiper.com is interesting--you need a little patience, tho. |
Since this topic does not talk about just one program but several different programs of the same type and your asking a question, I think it's in the wrong section.
Moving to Chit Chat.... Ha n G O n  |
For now . i don't use any of them !!!
Im lucky .. i didn't receive alot of spam for now .. maybe in the future i will need to use one ! |
my isp setup a spam blocker for us users and it blocks about 95% of the spam i get. (usually about 400 emails a week). so i don't have any spam blocker except for them.

Here's a trick for the future:
Your private email address (the one you get from your ISP) don't give out to anyone aside from family and close friends. For all other correspondence get a few free accounts at hotmail or any of the other free web-based hosts. Use one of em for all other correspondence, use one of em for when you fill out web forms that need email addresses (like discussion boards, etc.) and use one for when you fill out "contest" forms or *ahem* websites of a 'racy' nature ;) That way your private email is kept clean and all the spam goes to someone elses server to clog it up, they can deal with it and you can pretty much ignore the majority of it :D It may sound like a hassle to set it all up but it is not too hard to have your email client check more than one account and in the long run is a lot less of a hassle than dealing with all that spam ;) Hope this helps some :) |
I have two email addresses, one I use for personal correspondance, the other for filling in forms etc from the net. I get a ton of spam to the latter, and have decide to migrate to another one. Even my personal one is not immune though, I get a couple now and then. Now I ask you, I only give that out to proper living people (ie friends, yes I do have them ;)) so how do spammers get it when thats the only method I have? The other I understand, not this one.
I HATE SPAM! Oh due to the nature of my Email prog, I don't have a spam blocker. |
I using Spam Inspector Microsoft Outlook Ecpress Edition.
CLEAN INCOMING EMAIL The Spam Inspector uses unparalleled filtering technology based on statistical semantic pattern matching, blocking 99% of all incoming junk mail, even foreign spam!. FIGHTBACK with the SPAM INSPECTOR Help the Internet community by REPORTING spammers to their Internet Service Providers and get off junk mail lists by BOUNCING email back to spammers fooling them into believing your email address is "INVALID", all with the click of a button. Ya have to love those free email accounts, too much SPAM... Make a new account. :D
I make sure that every email I send out to more than one person I always put my email address in the TO: and BCC: everyone I want to sent it to. Why? To avaid giving away the peoples email address from my address book. It don't really keep my email from being SPAM but I want to keep other peoples email address as private as I can. Maybe they will repay the favor and do the same when emailing me. :) |
Ah ha! That's the NY mentality KC. :) Not a bad idea.
My sister continues to claim that Mail Wipe continues to be 100% effective on her 100+ spams a day. I've installed Spam Weed, posted by felixml on another thread and it looks like I suspect Mail Wipe to work, using a matrix of blocking methods. |
Ad aware does the trick for me, reliable and efficent.
|
Ad aware does spam?
|
I'd like to report back on Spam Weed, subject of felixml's post. I've been using it for 2 days now. I think it has good possibilities. Beats the pants off McAfee Spam Killer v 4. I've got it installed on each of 4 pc's on the LAN. Spam Weed needs a small amout of training, but after that it runs very well.
Btw, it's version 1.3.2, the latest on on the editor's web site. You can get confused about version 1.0, 1.1 and even the beta. It's a keeper. :) |
Listen, I know we are discussing anti-spam proggies, but why not just use the filters included with Outlook. Anyone not in my address book has their message deleted. Even Hotmail has that. 100% effective. I know we don't all use Outlook, just my .02.
MNKid |
MinnesotaKid, I don't do that because I do receive e-mail from people not in my book. SpamWeed is working at more than 90% today. It let 1 of 25 through on one of my e-mail accounts. I have 2 ISP's and SpamWeed will handle both. It's simple and silent. It automatically sends me an e-mail at periods I specify to tell me what was blocked in case I forget to look. On day one it considered 2 valid e-mails as junk, All I had to do was a mouse click to add those to the White List.
I use hotmail for my registrations to boards and stuff. It's filter is about as effective as McAfee Spam Killer--70% or so. I got on a lot of spam lists after making some posts on news groups. But, I also note that scanners seem to be able to get into isp data bases. I'm getting some spams with headers that show 4 and 5 adresses on the same spam, in alpha order. |

NP Works pretty damn good once you have everything setup the way you like. Even though I never get spam!!! I just have it setup to seprate all my friends, family, school, board, news, etc.
|
Update: Spam Weed v.1.3.2 is doing the job. Gonna stick with it for now.
Thanks for making the thread interesting. |
