I started using Windows Server 2003 as theoretically it should be lot stabler than Windows XP.
Well, to me it is: 1. Fast User Switching - Solved 2. Not a faster internet connection than Windows XP - Resolved 3. Welcome Screen - Solved up to now. How about you guys? :) |
Yes the same really
Plus having to enable direct x and install things like the windows media player on a new install Everyone keeps asking me why the themes aren't working and there is no sound and why the aquarium screensaver isn't working, etc Keep having to explain what to do, lol |

back to the topic people,
if anybody missed how to enabled welcome screen and fast user switching in Windows XP Professional Version 2003, here is the thread about it: http://www.betaone.net/forums/index....0&#entry150360 |
It's ok I've stopped feeling sorry now :cool2: :lol1:
For the faster internet connection did you try tcipoptimiser? That has speeded up my connection in the past  |
It's a server, why would you want fast user switching? I's supposed to sit there locked in the server room and serve the clients and be managed using terminal services or some other remote software.
After all Server 2003 Enterprise at $3,999 plus licences isn't aimed at the gamers B) What was the problem with the speed and welcome screen? My copy works great in a test environment in VMware. I'm testing it before upgrading my servers (SQL Server 2003 and IIS 6) I really like the security settings in IE and IIS. The new shutdown logger is a little annoying when installing software and rebooting a couple of times but it's probably very usefull when something happens. What I'm missing is better pricing :( Many smaller companies will probably think it's too much and switch to another platform or take a chance and use pirated versions. |
The simple answer is I am using Windows XP Professional Version 2003 with the NT Kernal 5.2
More stabler and with all uptodate security fixes. People who use Server 2003 as a Server, that's fine. But for the others (basically the majority) running it as XP Professional Version 2003 is cool too. :D Here is what another guy says at Neowin: As far as i am concern i think Windows Server 2003 is WinXP + SP2 plus a lot of Server Features and components. The bottom line is that Both OS base should be the same. However. Server 2003 seems to use NT 5.2 Keneral rather than 5.1 as WinXP. Since there aren't much information publicaly avalible on what has change that i will ignore for the time being. And most of the sever features in Server 2003 can disable easily. While features that a workstation user want can be tuned back on easily as well. Therefore by tuning Server 2003 into a workstation they are getting a better/ stableier/ and newer OS to use. Without continue downloading 10s of update or applying Services Pack to XP or slip streaming their XP. However i do agree that turning a sever product into desktop use may not be the best idea. As far as complablity are concern i am not sure will it run program as smooth as XP does when running old legency applications. |
I dunno.. I never had any unstability problems and I've been running XP since it shipped. What kind of unstability?
Yeah all the updates are really tiresome. |
I could say that i m with McoreD to this. Its a plain simple OS building in a pretty stable kernel, who makes u feel that u are the boss and not the opposite.U can disable/enable things giving u the freedom to choose and play without fearing that u will loose your work, but most of all is the security feeling that gives u.Okey its not funcy etc..but u can make it if u want.Personally i dont like the themes,etc..as i never see the screen...lol..but yea i still listen my music,is all i want, just to find some solitaire games and i will feel like a king, yea i miss the Xp games.

So has anyone found a way to enable sound using server 2003??

Look for Windows Audio and set the service to auto, then start it. Providing all your drivers are installed for the hardware then sound will work |
Dunno if it's right, but I think that it is a little faster when handling big files than WinXP.
Been using it for a couple of weeks and it is very nice. I had WinXP before and that did good too. I never had instablitity problems with XP, and I even had uptimes for as long as 8 days. |
Being running it for a while, and I like the ability to do things such as remote desktop and setting up an FTP site. While the fancy look of XP was kinda cool at first, I prefer the simple and clean look of W2K3.
And it definitely feels more solid. You can tweak it, have the power of Administrative tools, and just an overall work horse. As for speed, it IS fast. Out of the box with basic services running, I'd say it is faster than XP. Top it off with the improved performance of the 8 MB Cache buffer on a new 160 GB Hard Drive, and this thing is a pleasure to work with. Cheers! |
Also you can enable the Wndows XP themes the same way you enable the audio
Just start the themes service and you are able to select luna again:D |
Yeppers. I really like the 2003 version. It is running on my laptop for months now. Went through all the steps to make it more, for lack of a better term, XP like. Very happy with it now.

Hi,
I had a problem where Win Server 2003 twqeaked as XP 2003 refused to see my USB hard-drive. Solution is to goto: Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management Then select the USB hard-drive or partitions, right-click the select Change Drive Letter and select ADD, then give it a driver letter. Reboot and it should be fine. Cheerz :) ;) :D |
Hi,
The only problem I seem to have now is that Win Server 2003 doesn't see my Digital Camera when it's connected to the USB port when I'm trying to download some pictures. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Cheerz :) ;) :D |
Have you tried turning on Windows Image Acquisition service? Hope that works. :)

Yep, someone told me a little while ago and it worked, you were on the right track. Cheerz :) ;) :D |
Isn't there a working AMD 64 bit version as well?
|
I have a machine that I am considering trying this on and would like to know should I or not.
Pent III 1ghz Ram 512 Hard Drive 60gig Burner The main use would be a server to replace Win2k Pro or would i be better off with Win2k? Thanks Dudelive |
I am running my server: Windows Server 2003 in a Pentium II 400 MHz with 512 MB RAM.
If you already have Windows 2000 in a good working condition, rather than potentially disrupting your stable environment by upgrading to Windows Server 2003, you might want to leave it as it is. Otherwise, having Windows Server 2003 installed is clearly a better choice for you. :) Cheers, McoreD |
only fault i've found with win2003 so far is IT"S GOT NOT GAMES!!! :crybaby: :crybaby:
had to manually copy minesweeper and hearts and solitaire from friend's pc. freecell wouldnt work cause some files werent compatible... wierd :) now i can slay away some hrs with mindless games, lol |
just a question, could ya hint me in on how to get the welcome screen and fast-user enabled on 2k3? thanks ahead of time...and i've been runnin 2k3 standard and small business for about 5 months now, and it runs a hell of a lot better than xp pro, i have small business setup as server, and standard tweaked for a workstation, and i can run any game i had on xp on 2k3 better and faster :)
|
Hi, you cannot really enable the Welcome Screen in Server 2003 unless you convert it to Windows XP Professional Version 2003.
If you are interested, check out: http://www.betaone.net/index.php?showtopic...=welcome+screen Cheers, McoreD |
