Hello All~

For some reason, it takes me over 1 minute to load up the Add/Remove Programs List... After loading it up the first time, any other time will take a split second to load up... But why is it taking so long the first time?

I have a P4 2.53Ghz , 1 Gig Rambus Ram (1066), Running Windows XP SP-1 (with all Critical Updates installed).

Is anyone else experiencing this type of behavior?

Thanks for your help as usual! :)

I have the same problem here

I have download a fix to increase the speed of some windows XP installation but it don't change anything for me

Oups......Forget to said that I'm running SP2 1204 :D

SlickVic78 26th Apr 03 05:10 PM

Hey Bads,

I did install the Q815411_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU patch, thinking that would help me out a little bit - but - it apparently did nothing to help. It was making so many of my other applications run a bit slower than before. So I removed it the other day.

I have the same problem. If i want to uninstall something or change windows components i start up add and remove programs and leave it for around a minute- it's usually finished reading the registy by then, XPsp1, P4 2.53, 1gb ddr ram with all critical updates.

Vinnie 26th Apr 03 07:12 PM

It takes mine around 20 seconds to load, XP Pro. I only have a p3 1 gig with 512 ram and (2) 40 gig hard drives.
I've been using add remove plus and it loads in just a few seconds.

SlickVic78 26th Apr 03 09:35 PM

Do you guys think it's only a P4 issue?

Investor 26th Apr 03 10:25 PM

Have you tried to clean the registery? I use RegScrabXP and
no problem with Add/Remove 2seconds maybe loads up.
May be it's not the solution, but It's not because of P4 I think.

P4 3.06GHz 1G RAM WinXP Pro.

DoG 27th Apr 03 12:24 AM

Nope, i think its the fact that my installation has been hammered senseless over the last few weeks and needs re-installing. Maybe this time i will make that ghost image :P

SlickVic78 27th Apr 03 05:51 AM

I really wish I made a ghost image of my install now! :( Ah well... I have regcleaner... I should check into RegScrubXP.

Thanks!

Yeap, when I do clean Install of XP, which probably happend last time 6-7 month ago,
I use Regcleaner & RegScrabXP then defragment my C: then, use Bootvis from Microsoft to make
XP boot faster, I suppose you know this prog. Then create Image of c: with PQ ImageDrive.

Usually I clean up XP with Regcleaner & RegScrabXP every week or so. But one thing is that, even
before cleaning up I don't remember Add/Remove loading for too long, may be a bit, like 4seconds.

To make PC work faster: do Defragment of C: then All reg leaning, then Bootvis. that is it.
I also think it dependce of Soft you are installing, cause couple of weeks ago, my PC started
Shutdown very slowly, I couldn't do anything and anyway I wanted to restore image, so I did and
now is flying like a charm.

I don't think it's because of P4. Just tried mine, and it took about 3 seconds. I use RegVac (novice mode) to clean my registry.

I am pretty sure this always happen when there's too much programs installed. it says: "please wait while the list is being populated" and it halts for a while in my comp as well. :(

SlickVic78 27th Apr 03 05:22 PM

Hey ~*McoreD*~

For me, if I click on the Add/Remove Programs Icon, it goes to an hourglass mouse cursor for like 20 seconds, then the list appears. But after the first time, it will then pop up in the matter of 2 or 3 seconds... I don't know if it is the amount of programs I have installed because I have more Window "Hotfixes" in my list than installed programs :) Really doesn't matther being it isn't like an every day thing that I need to use. So I guess I'll live with it for now...

Thanks,
-SlickVic78

Yes SlickVic78, you are right and we both are in the same opinion. :).
What I actually meant was "the number of items" in the Add/Remove Programs. I just used the word "programs" (that's wrong use of words). :D

SlickVic78 28th Apr 03 04:12 AM

Hey ~*McoreD*~

It is still kinda odd that it would take so long to build the list... What else is it looking for when it builds the list, the amount of space each prog takes up, and if it is used often... What else could it be doing?

I used to have an AMD Athlon 1900+ with 1 Gig of PC2100 DDR Ram and the same amount of installs (actually the same list), and this never happened... This is why I asked :) I am wondering if it could be due to one of the Hotfixes off of Windows Update that could have caused this?

It takes a few seconds to load that up. I have a Celeron 900 (wannabe P3) w 512 MB SDRAM, 20 GB WD HDD. Could be the P4. I've heard other 'issues' with that CPU especially with the new ones above 2GHz.

war59312 1st May 03 08:14 PM

Well mine says "please wait while the list is being populated" for about half a sec. and it loads fine.

I clean the registry every night and de-frag every week.

There is about 500 "Programs" listed.

AlthlonXP 2200+ 1.8Ghz @ 2.3Ghz and 1536MB DDR RAM

I have 43GB of free space left too.

My old P3 600mhz has about 100 programs installed or so and it takes about 10secs. to load every time. With 11gb of free space and 192mb pc133 ram. Only 45mb of free ram and when I launch add/remove the cpu is used at 100% until it loads and only 15mb of free RAM. I don't know how people last with only 128mb.

Might be a bug since it only uses about 38% of my cpu on my Althlon.

And yea I have the update installed. And same thing before I installed. It did fix other issues though like ie loading slow.

Now I am starting to think it effects pentium systems the most because my friends old AMD 350mhz machine loads add/remove in about 6secs. and he has at least 200 programs installed. And he only has 128mb of ram.

SlickVic78 1st May 03 08:21 PM

Hey war59312,

Thanks for that info! It's rather odd, because some people have this issue, and some don't. I don't remember this ever happening before SP-1... I could be wrong though. Maybe SP-2 would resolve this. But like I said, it's not like I use Add/Remove everyday, so I can deal with the slow load up time. :)

Ok everyone. I believe my problem is solved... Here is the solution:

For anyone who owns an Intel with a compatible chipset, I totally recommend you download and install Intel's Application Accelerater program. After doing so, I noticed my systems had a boost in speed! Things were loading up so much faster! My Add/Remove program issue is now solved and am getting the expected behavior as I once had :)

The link: hxxp://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/

Hope this helps all those who are/were experiencing the issue I was having!

Yea I already have that installed on my p3 600mhz. Same.
