A few Problems First:-
1. xp is running real slow, like my processors are working overtime (2 - 512 gbddrram = 1gb ram) 2. unable to delete files immeditely, after i touch delete, itll take a few minutes to delete or never delete at all...i just had to set my recycle bin to immediate delete and drag trash onto desktop then drag in to recycle bin to erase after 5 minutes...... 3. there is another forum post similar to but not like this one describing the similar problems...personally i think the problems are the windows xp hot fixes from the updates page......all of my programs are the same and everytime i rei stall itll be aiight...but after the hotfixes i seem to see a difference.................. what should i do, what can i delete or look for how to go about solving this problem...holla baxck |
When the system starts running slow press ctrl+alt+del to get the task manager up. That way you cann see what processess are taking up all the resources. Find the one that is being greedy and kill it, then try to find out what program it was and reinstall it
|
I had a problem like that and I finally found out that "Go Back" was interferring. If you have installed Go Back even a long time ago it could be your prob. Don't disable it just remove it completely and see what happens, linda
|
Yeah, Linda, that Go Back app was really the pits; screwed up my machine too!
I just LOVE your signature!!! wase4711 |
You are right Linda ;)
I install the latest version of Goback last week and I have to restore a backup with Drive Image :( Goback is a real shit for me :D |
Cookbuoy, have you changed/added anything? How long has this been going on? Was the system ok before? We need more info.

Let us know what AV software you are running, if you are using any of the backup programs that are mentioned above.
If push comes to shove then i would reinstall it and just install the programs you would usually do without updating the OS. Then after a few weeks if it starts running slow again you know its installed software thats causing the problem and not Windows Update. Out of curiosity what programs run at start up? If you need a quick way of looking the at the startup time programs goto www.mlin.net and download startup control panel from there. It will also tell you what programs are called by the registry at startup. When you find out could you post the list here? It may help to see where the problem is |
the av software i have are things like wintv 2000 by hauppauge, winmpg video convert, tmpegenc, cdrwin, a few iso busting programs, quicktime power dvd , norton system works and a few other programs like smart ftp messenger, office xp, ace mega codecs pack, and micorsoft plus, thats about it.........................what may i ask are you looking for so i can give you an account of if i have it or something like it................
|
Sorry, i meant antivirus software. Some antivirus software are greedy as hell on system resources. The reason i ask about sartup programs is after a while you get a kind of "feel" for what should be running at startup and what shouldnt- some virus's attatch themselves to system startup programs and can slow a system down, also spyware/adware is known to cause system hangs and also to consume system resources
|
well i nthat case i am running norton system works, thats the compltet package with disck checkers a nd file cleanrs as well as a pop up ad filter, those are the only two things that have to start up.............
|
Are their any registry startup entries? HKLMRun or HKCURun? And as a thought have you disabled system restore?
|
i dunno what HKLMRun or HKCURun are.....and i have not turned offf system restore.should i
|
As for sytem restore, you could try removing it or at least reduce the size to about 500 mbs.
To find out what is loading, I can think of two choices. 1- Start/Run/ and type msconfig to see what is loading. 2- my choice is a program called StartUpCPL by Mike Lin- you can find it here - you will see the tabs for HKML etc. You can uncheck what you want to stop loading - then recheck it to have it load. _http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml You might also want to STOP the Indexing Service unless you really need it. N.B. You didn't mention whether you tried to uninstall Norton's GOBACK or anything else like SystemRestore that allows you to reverse changes. The reason for that is that everytime you try to delete something a record must be made somewhere and the file "hidden" from view, all of which takes resources and time. |
aiight homie, imma try it asap aiight...sounds like you know what your doing...lol...your better than me...aiight...ill hit the board back in an hour...hey is it aiight to post email address and ftps in this part of tthe forum?...holla back...nassau,bahamas born and raised...........

Sometimes I have had problems with ZoneAlarm and RealONE player slowing the machine down. Also check your machine for spyware (use adaware) as well.

It seems you're having difficulties with Messenger. A good way of getting rid of it in XP Pro is Start->Run->gpedit.msc. This brings up the Group Policy window. Open User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Windows Messenger. There are two settings, "Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run" and "Do not automatically start Windows Messenger initially". Double-click on each in turn and set them to "Enabled". That stops Messenger under normal cirumstances.
If you use Outlook Express you will need to make a registry change to avoid a lengthy pause as OE tries to start Messenger when it opens. Start->Run->regedit then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Add a new DWORD, name it Hide Messenger, give it value 2. That's it. That may not do much to speed up your machine but it will get rid of the pesky Messenger if it's annoying you. Hope it helps. :) |

I never noted the problem until today. Smart FTP was downloading a 143MB file and suddently. everything else slowed down: SmartFTP was taking 100% of CPU activity. The d/l completed ok and shutting down smartftp zeroed it out. Gonna install the fix Kamikazee rerfers to above, and also noted elsewhere on BetaONE.
