Is there some software that will back up to CDRWs but span the whole backup over them rather than sorting out what files go on what CD. Or even a program that will span a massive file over some CDs. So if I do a backup of my hard disk (critical files are at 2GB!) then I can span tem over a set of CD's.

Do I make sense? Sorry if I don't first thing in the morning!

Cheers

Genie Back up Manager can back up your computer over several CDs and I believe EZCD Creator 6 can also perform back ups over several cds.

Thanks, giving Genie a try ;)

Don't hold me to this, but I think the newer Neros can do it as well.

If you wanna backup your harddisk, better use programs like Acronis TrueImage,Norton Ghost,DriveImage and similar......they are much more reliable to perform a system backup...

Stringent 1st Mar 03 09:34 PM

Yeah but they dont span over multiple CDs I think. Genie seems to work fine.

Hi,

Au contraire! Both DriveImage and Ghost span CDs as they make a system backup. In addition, both have tools that allow you to selectively restore 1 or more files from the backup rather than doing a full restore. I like and use DriveImage, but Ghost is just as good.

I always use Drive Image and I'm really satisfy with this program ;)

Not only CDs.......Ghost 2003 even spans over multiple DVD media..... ;)

The current versions of Drive Image, Deploy Center and Norton Ghost allow spanning over multiple CDs. Personally, I use Deploy Center, having found it more reliable than Norton Ghost and supports all M$ disk (FAT, FAT32 and all current NTFS) and LINUX volumes.

Woah, didn't know that about Drive Image, that the 2002 version? Makes sense really. I really wanted a backup of critical files (rather than a whole HD backup) but that is useful to know.

Thanks all.

I LOVE Drive Image, but I wonder when the hell they are going to add incremental capability to it. If you're smart and backup every 2 weeks or so your using too many cd's. Supposedly if you use it partnered with DataKeeper it covers all your bases, but it ties up alot of space on my backup HD.

Maybe when they find a safe way to make it work properly for NTFS partitions........otherwise is would be useless for most of the experienced NT users...

Have you tried the backup utility in XP ?

Theres a wonderful invention called Rewritable CDs ;)

The backup utility in XP sucks IMO, not for the amount of critical data I have to backup, its like 2GB worth, includes documents, pictures, email database etc.

flashpanhunter 4th Mar 03 05:36 PM

Just for the record: Acronis TrueImage 6 spans over several CDz too. :)

Fisher 4th Mar 03 07:06 PM

I LOVE Drive Image too but Drive Image 2002 is good for only 2-3 Cd's
and PowerQuest Deploy Center 5.5 is good for multiple CD's.

redkitty 7th Mar 03 08:31 AM

"Drive Image 2002 is good for only 2-3 Cd's".

Odd. Can you give any details? I haven't yet tried disc spanning with DriveImage (DriveImage 5.0).

Gfields 7th Mar 03 08:37 AM

WinOnCD 6 supports disk spanning.

Can't remember if v5 did

Norton Ghost 2003 supports Disk Spanning! I used it 24/12/2002. Two CDs and 3GB worth stuff was compressed and spanned!

SpeedRacer 20th Mar 03 06:06 PM

Good old Norton Ghost 2003... a program that's a must have. As stated before it does do spanning over multiple cds and the great thing about it is it works through a floppy.. nothing to install. It also doesn't matter what platform you're on... Windows, Linux, Mac, Fat32, NTFS... it works for everything.
