Hello,

I dunno how this one happened folks-

I decided to try and check for updates, so I tried accessing Windows Update from the link in IE6 (SP-1) - by going to Tools/Window Update. To my surprise, it didn't work... It took me to a totally different page: http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir...ienews&o s=N6. I tried repairing my XP installation, but still, the Windows Update link in IE6 takes me to the wrong location.

Is there a way to reprogram this link to point to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com? I tried looking through the registry but came up empty handed. :(

Any help you can provide will greatly be appreciated.
(Windows XP Pro SP-1, IE6 SP-1)

Thanks!,

i am using windows xp pro sp1, and i don't it is right with xp. mine takes me to the right windows update webpage. :o

Try the link in your start menu. See where it takes you. It might not be a solution, but it will give you an idea of it is just IE that is broke or something in your OS like a reg setting.

SlickVic78 27th Feb 03 04:15 PM

I did try the one in the start menu, and that one does work. So there must be a setting for IE that is all screwed up... Where can I find this setting though? I went through the registry and could not find anything regarding a link to Windows Update within IE. I even tried searching for the URL that is currently assigned - no luck :(

You could always go here:
_http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
then drag the link to your Start Menu and delete the one that doesn't work.

Hey richardc2000,

That's the thing - all other Windows Update links work... Just the one that is within Internet Explorer. I am talking about the one where you select Tools from the top menu within the browser and then select Windows Update. This is not something you can just create a link and drag and drop (although I wish it was that easy).

Thanks though! :)

Anyone else have any ideas how to get this fixed...

Thanks,

Hmm... I cut and pasted that url from above:

http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir...ienews&o s=N6

into my browser address window and it took me to here:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

I think the first url is a redirector that sets up your

product prd=ie
this one am not sure on clcid=0x0409
product version? pver=6.0
not sure here either ar=ienews
operating system os=N6

then once that info is gathered redirects you to the second url and figures your downloads per the first url's specs ;)

*just a wild guess* :D

Anyway, it works for me SlickVic - weird stuff, I will keep my eyes open for why it does not work for you :)

I'm running sp1 and that one works ok for me. I know that doesn't help you much SlickVic78, but I'd say that rules out the fact that it happens to everyone with XP.
Did you try cleaning out all your history, cookies, etc?
Another trick to try is go to C:\WINDOWS\inf, right click ie.inf, and click install (have your xp cd handy)

Hope you can get it fixed.

SlickVic78 27th Feb 03 09:04 PM

belthazor,

You are right on the money! :)

I ended up trying to reinstall IE via it's inf file - but that didn't work... So I had nothing to lose and wiped out all my cookies and temporary internet files... All of sudden the SOB worked :)

Thanks so much for everyone's efforts in trying to help me out with this little problem. I've said this once, and I'll say it again - It is people like everyone in this community that makes this board the best!

Thanks so much everyone!

Uhm,

How about http://www.microsoft.com/ie? If the IESetup wizard don't work, use the ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E" as a command to download to full copy and install.

Hopes this helpes . . .

SlickVic78 27th Feb 03 10:29 PM

Hey Cactus,

Thanks for the helpful tip... I was able to use belthazor's advice to get the link working again... It may have been a temporary internet file lingering around that threw it off... Not quite sure though... After removing both the cookies and temporary internet files - it started to work again.

I was looking for a way to reinstall IE, but do not need to do this anymore. I will hold on to that tip though, just in case I have the urge to reinstall.

Thanks!

Bads 27th Feb 03 11:18 PM

This is the fix for that:

open regedit (from the run command)

Browse to the following keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Help_Menu_URLs]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\InstallInfo\DownloadSiteURL]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\JITInfo\DownloadSiteURL]

Change the value to: http://windowsupdate.com

That will do the trick

SlickVic78 27th Feb 03 11:31 PM

Hey Bads,

This is some useful info. I will be sure to look into trying your fix if it does happen again... Allthough, while going through my registy, I did not see a key for Help_Menu_URLs within the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ branch.

Glad to be of help SlickVic78. :)

SlickVic78 28th Feb 03 01:13 AM

Hey belthazor,

I think I found out what was causing this all to happen... I had to look further into the problem because it continued to happen... And every time I would remove the cookies/temporary internet files, it would work again...

So I ended up finding out the problem (I think)... This is what I did to figure it out... I ended up wiping out all temp files and cookies, then open the browser and try out the link - it worked...

Then when opening up MediaPlayer 9.0 and then trying the link again - it went back to not working... I guess there was something within MediaPlayer that was making this all happen... In any case, I reinstalled MediaPlayer 9.0, and so far, it hasn't happened again...

Again, thanks for the initial help because I wouldn't have been able to solve (or at least think I solved) this issue without a place to start... :)

And of course, there will be another post within this thread by me if what I did does not work... LOL.

This would be a good bug report to send to MS. Maybe there's already something in the db, I haven't looked.

Oh, and don't take this wrong, but hopefully you won't have to post here again. ;)

But if you have to and find out "the answer" I'd like to know myself. :)

Just Upgraded Media Player 9.0 and it started happening to me also....

_http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Did a system restore and all is well....Will wait before I Update Player again!!!!!!!!

SlickVic78 1st Mar 03 06:59 PM

Hey Grzyb,

I wish I could do the same - System Restore.... But unfortunately, I lost that restore point!... At least I know that other's are/were experiencing the same issue - that being WMP9. If I do come up with any other info, I'll be sure to let everyone know.

Thanks,

Delete this entire directory: C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate. Then empty your temporary internet files. Restart Internet Explorer. Worked for me after a long struggle!

SlickVic78 13th Mar 03 01:52 AM

Hey techtype,

Thanks for the tip. Allthough, this issue hasn't happened to me ever since the last time I posted within this thread. But I will be sure to remember this tip if it does happen to act up on me again! :)

Thanks!,
