I see that there is a lot of Linux versions available when reading through some of the threads here... Such as Red Hat and mandrake, what is the difference? Is one better then the other? Lastly, do I need a serial for either of these
Also, any good sites to learn a bit more on compatibility issues (hardware). So I can make sure the computer I am puttin it on has compatible hardware. Thanks, Lucky **EDIT** One more thing... Any good place to download this from? I am currently downloading Red Hat - but 26hrs time (BTW what is the disk two for, do I need this to complete the install or is it some extra crap) :( Hoping the speed picks up a bit. Then I will look for the mandrake one - just so I can have both just in case I find one is better...? **UPDATE** Ok, weell it seems that this server also has mandrake and it is perty fast (200+kb)... So now, is there any [i:cbdaf6192d]real[/i:cbdaf6192d] difference between the two of them - or am I just downloading two of the exact same things The downloads currently running are: enigma-i386-disc1.iso enigma-i386-disc2.iso enigma-docs.iso (what ever this is) Don't know what these two below are, but gett'n such a good speed figured why not... enigma-SRPMS-disc1.iso enigma-SRPMS-disc2.iso Then for mandrake I am grabb'n... Mandrake81-CD1-inst.i586.iso Mandrake81-CD2-ext.i586.iso Mandrake81-CD3-supp.i586.iso All of this should be done in about 4 hrs (I luv fast servers lol) [ November 26, 2001: Last edited by Lucky ]
|
go to www.linuxiso.org. they have links to most all distros you can d/l.
if you want something usful and be able to learn at the same time try building a router from your old box. go to www.clarkconnect.org or www.freesco.org. you can d/l all the software needed to build a router and you have something to learn with. i use a clarkconnect and can't imagine being without it now. |
Thanks doder, I will check them out :D
Thanks again, Lucky **EDIT** That clarckconnect thing is pretty nifty :D I already have a router, but that would be a neat little project  [ November 26, 2001: Last edited by Lucky ]
|

how can i install/edit is Firewall n/or security? it doesnt have GUI, so it won't work with rpm's n it will have to go by d hard way ;) , i mean... i'm a [b:f1d6487545]raw[/b:f1d6487545] newbie at linux scene... :( Will i have to download files/apps as 'source' n compile them so then i can install? n how do i know what 'switches' (-?) to use to install, when i get them? sorry for d long post, but i feel in old days of configuring win3.11/Win95,(kinda... Where are d f*** .exe?, lol) :D thx in advance. |
grc is really a bad joke. your clark is secure. there are some port left open by daulft{80,443}as well as some left open for the port semtry to guard. if anyone probes yoou the port sentry captures their ip and sends any othe probes, pings,or scans to a "black hole", in effect removing you from the net as far as the prober is concerned.

k, that's good to know.
i thing if i go there 'twice in a role'(closing my browser n opening it again n all) it should give a full stealth Box, right? i'll shure try it. :D i really don't know Linux, you know?....i mean... i dont know where i can visualise d log's, services, performance, devices... all things that r going on in d box without d GUI interface :-s thx for yr reply, man you seam to know abound a Linux box ;) could you help some? i just need some 'first enlightnement' to start [b:aed69c9202]digging...[/b:aed69c9202] ;) ;) could you give some clew(s)on how, mmm... e.x. how do i upgrade it's kernel?... or... how do i apply a patch for some program/service? (i'm asking this 1, cause some friend of mine pointed me a patch to 'secure it' as a 'stelth'box, i went got it, but it was a '***.patch' n i don't have a clew waht to do with it :( ... -sould i put it in some dir n overwrite some file? or apply it (how?) over some .conf file? please, help me out on this man, i'm really begigging to love 'Linux Way' more n more :D , i find it to be more fun to work with (go figure... n i'm still a RAW newbie, hehe), but i think i just need a 'first kick' to start messing it up, lol. the info that i've been founding around d net (pointed by friends n/or contacts) always assume you [b:aed69c9202]Know[/b:aed69c9202] what to do in front of d console... i don't. it's like putting a guy that all is life only knew there was Linux/Unix to mess with, n know he discover Windows in a DOS prompt :D maybe some ppl who r beggining to start linux know could post some links on how to REALLY start knowing it without d GUI. thx, this post must be a mile long already, lol. cheers [ November 27, 2001: Last edited by nnuxx ]
|
