Been playing around with easier linux distro's lately and happened across Xandros, this is one of the cleanest Linux builds I have played with, for a lifetime windows user this has been easier to work with then lindows ever has been.

and yes I tried the mainstreams like Redhat.

I'm sticking with Xandros, with the XandrosNetwork (like Clicknrun but free) I can install the programs I need and work with a linux box finally

rikytik 26th Dec 02 10:51 AM

The only download I could find is on Xandros site and it's a $99 fee. Found a mirror d/l but can't connect. Looks like a Debian distro with enhancements.

Any links?

I had trouble installing packages which are as tar.gz and .rpm under Mandrake Linux. Has this Linux distro has a different user-friendly (preferably graphical interface) application which could ease a homeuser to install tar.gz or .rpm files taking care of dependencies etc. ?

Thanks...

Check your PM rikytik :)

rikytik 26th Dec 02 03:40 PM

Thank you Italiano. Give it a whirl.

devilotx 26th Dec 02 10:13 PM

yeah this has Xandros Networks, a gui based installer, and you can use Apt-get with synaptic to do the better part of installs

This xandros is a great distro..

I have tried all the mainstream distros and have had software/hardware problems with all of them on my computer.

Two days ago, I set Xandros up on its own partition.
It runs perfectly on my machine. It is so smooth and slick..

I really recommend this fantastic distro..

My personal favourite distro is SUSE. It had a nice GUI for selecting the app you want, and its downloaded and installed effortlessly.

Also it detected all my hardware flawlessly, and runs very stable...

rikytik 5th Jan 03 10:16 AM

Got Xandros installed and it looks pretty good. Still testing.

**********later, next day********

It's looking even better. Cool, as a matter of fact.

Gotta agree with Devilotx and Italiano. Xandros is a good distro. Only thing I can't do so far is burn DVD's. Otherwise the LAN is working great and the printer features fully functional over the LAN (i.e. double sided printing)

Some problems accessing the MS machines from the Linux boxes, but that seems to be my lack of knowlege.

The only thing saving Billie is the immense amount of work it takes to move from one o/s to another. His profits are assured for now, --but he ought to sweat a little bit, because the competition is getting close.

Now on to Longhorn---------<wry grin>

Gotta say, still runing xandros, still loving it, I am thisclose to dumping windows for it. as it stands now I run Xandros in VMWare on my main pc and I have a dedicated Xandros install on an older pc (ps, xandros runs the nuts on a 500 celly with 128 mb ram)

rikytik 13th Jan 03 12:32 PM

PM sent, nnuxx.

rikytik 13th Jan 03 12:37 PM

Same here deviltox. Xandros is still the 2.4 kernel, I think. 2.5 introduces USB 2.0 support.

I have the Technology Preview that comes with Xandros version 1.0 when you buy it. It seems to be a pretty stock version of Debian 3--still with the 2.4 kernel, but with KDE 3.0. No real reason to install it.

I'm particularly pleased with the ease of hooking up to my Windows LAN and printer sharing, although I still have some issues with Windows LAN regarding the use (or not) of the IPX/SPX protocol. Largely due to my lack of understanding of WINS and/or lmhost files possibilities.

You're slightly wrong there because the 2.4 series also has USB 2.0 support. However I'm using the 2.4.20. Don't know what release Xandros use.

BOOMSHOT 13th Jan 03 08:57 PM

Sounds great...

I have tried a few Linux distros...

Would love to try Xandros.

Could one of you guys help me out with this one. I would love to try it.

Maximum Respect ;) :) :D

Thanx in advance

rikytik 14th Jan 03 11:52 AM

I stand corrected, craftyc. I had just read the item about 2.5 in Linux Magazine. I do note that Mandrake 9.1 beta has just been released with Linux 2.4.21pre2 and I believe version 9 was already USB 2.0 compliant.

Xandros ships with 2.4.19. It is essentially Debian 3.0 . Xandros acquired this from Corel, tweaked and repackaged it.

I think I could arrange upping the bin/cue on my brothers work T1 line, if I ask his boss nicely enough...

Would anyone be interested?

Nd4Spd 15th Jan 03 11:01 PM

I sure would.

Many thanks.
