I'd just like some opinions on which antivirus program from which one of these two companies provides the BEST in PC security. I'm also surprised MS didn't include a "lite" version of one of these programs(or one of their own anti-viral creations) as an integrated part of Windows XP....as they did with their firewall. I suppose if you're internet connections&ports are firewalled, than there's no security or virus risks, eh?

my personal preference will be Mcafee...

somehow or rather, it gives me lesser headaches...
norton always has a lot of stuff....makes it cumbersome..

but recently i am using Innoculate....quite a nice AV pro.

Nortons is the winner hands down. For managed systems.
And in Innoculate is crappy. has some serious issues. doesn't pick up some serious viruses.

Norton has a great automatic update system, has been functioning reliably. It iseems no nonsense to me. I try new versions of McAfee from time to time, but return to Norton.

Old time fan of AVP, but no more since finding out how well NAV functions

I've always used Norton.

We found that Mcafee killed your machine if you didn't update the SuperDAT file regularly. We used to just update the DAT file but when the scan engine got so out of date, your hold machine would die, (blue screen of death).

Never had any problems with Norton AV since 2001.

Just my 2 pence worth.

I actually downloaded a virus directly from mcafee once LOL.

Its cumbersom, but Norton imo is best

we use corp 7.5 and at home I have Systemworks 2003 and itworks
great.....

Just some problem with the installation from Systemworks so I try VirusScan but now I have uninstall NAV from Systemworks and Install another one copy of NAV independly :lol:

Now all is working fine ;) anyway all Norton products are good :D

And I have uninstall VirusScan, just keep the firewall

i dont have installed any antivirus-software, firewall, anti-trojaner, etc.

i prefer drive-image to backup my system, thats all

i dont want to blow up my system with any neurotic-software

I am using NAV2003.
but i actually wanna stick with McAfee VirusScan as they have links with MicroSoft. (Hotmail emails are scanned using MVS)
I try new versions of McAfee time to time, hoping it will fit with me, but eventually I go back to NAV as soon as I get a software error in MVS.
I havent tried MVS7Pro still though.

I think they are both good, but my experience tells me to stick to Norton. McAfee has gotten ver commercial and gimmicky in my view.

If all you do is back up your system, you would also be backing up any virust/trojan you might have.

If you are not running behind a router, at the very least put in a free firewall ;)

anyway:
McAfee VirusScan 7 Pro was installed smoothly in windows 98 (my testing environment).
the DAT definition files weren't downloaded without interruption. unlike in Norton, it began not responding and had to restart the update. and the updating is a pretty much slower process than in NAV too

I used to love McAfee until there was some facts that leaked that they were considering allowing a backdoor for a trojan the US government agencies were developing. Norton when they were asked flat out said NO to the request. The trojan was hence dropped because it would have required that all AV software producers go along, but ever since then Mcafee has given me the willies. :unsure:

Secondly, since moving to Norton, I have not had errors and problems like I had with McAffee 7.

Currently, I use McAfee 6.02 Pro (will go with 7.0) at home and haven't had a single problem with it (using Win 95/98/SE/XP) for over four years.

We use NAV 7.XX CE at work. IMHO, NAV is better for the work environment where you need to manage across a large network but McAfee is better for home use.

I had to find and delete all the registry settings after trying to install NAV at home. I went back to McAfee after the third "fixing" job using NAV.

BTW, I think NAV charges a nominal amount for Virus Definition files after a year where as McAfee is free for the lifetime of the product. Then again, if you have access to the software at work, then you could get the definition files for free.

Actually, TCM, I think there are quite a few risks involved even with firewalls in place. I am sure I heard of "hostile" web pages that can do nasty things with java, there are email trojans and worms and don't forget that firewalls and routers (hardware and software based) have chinks in their armor as well - If a human made it a human can break it ;) :blink:

All we can do really is just raise the bar a little higher and make it harder to compromise a system ;)

other wise it is pretty hard to understand which is more popular, yea, i am still with NAV. downloaded the Professional Edition 2003. pretty good. :)

i hate to say it, but norton beats out mcaffe. i used to hate norton and avoid it at all costs, but they seem to have gotten their act together with norton av 2002. mcaffe, on the other hand, seems to have gone downhill in their latest releases.

I have always been using SystemWorks which includes Norton AntiVirus. Just the otherday I have upgraded to Version 2003.
As always, it works fine. :D
