How about a swear box, donate the thousands of Euro's to a good cause.

There seems to be one guy that's trying to impress everone else with the idea he knows some four-letter words.
I complained about his language quite some time ago, (and actually had him removed for any poss I looked at. You can't do that anymore), so I hope we can clean it up a bit.
I'm old enough to remember when some words were not used in the company of females and/or kids.
You've got my support.

My daughter is 15 and when she watches 15 rated movies i sit there shocked, does it have to be F-this and F-that every sentence. don't get me wrong I can swear better than some, but there used to be a limited, did'nt there?

It gets worse every day. Just today while watching USA, channel 25, I heard the F word three times. I was watching Nash Bridges. No parental advisory or anything. Sad world we are living in. Guess no one really cares cause no one is really doing anything about it.

I think we should do something about it, If we don't let the young ones know how will they learn. They will grow up f-ing and before we know it it will became a normal part of the langauge. Ie; Good F-ing morning teacher, good F-ing morning class.

anyways i shall get of my box and let the majority decide.

not just swearing either

but on that subject

i rember last year having to say "Bitch" three times last year at loud when reading to the class

they dont let u skip words

also raceal crap is a big problem

its funny cause they dont want people say the n word yet they make u read it

in 11th grade we had to read a book called "Black Boy"

read it some time

we had to read all the cursing and everything

thats really messed up

that send mixed messages to everyone even me

they so dont curse and everything yet then they want u to read it

makes no sense to me

kinda of stuipd dont u think

RadiationBoy 14th Sep 02 07:41 AM

i dunno I don't see cuss words as beign so bad. after all there just words. you make the seem so baaaaad and of corse kids are going to be into say them. I just see them as words and they don't bother me at all.

its the violece that gets me. I see little kids growing up all the time palying video games and watching movies where people are getting blown to bits all the time. and they go running around shooting with play guns and stuff. I mean violence is cool. no wonder there's so much violence. anyway that was just some of my ranting lolol.

oh and just so you know I'm not old lol I'm 18 actually. I've grown up my entire life without tv. I mean i had a tv with a vcr but no "tv". also I've never had a game system, although i do play games on my computer now :D. so anyway thats probly why I think little kids exposed to so much violence is so f*cked up.

*** NEWS FLASH *** A lot of people swear! I even like to do it myself sometimes :P

I really don't see the swearing on this board as much of an issue at all. In point of fact, this board is much tamer than many of the other ones I frequent. Like RadiationBoy said, they are just words. I grew up in Little Havana and most people I knew used "swear" words as a natural part of their everyday life. It's really no big deal. So are people who don't swear "better" than those who do? I think not.

If you as a parent decide to shield your child from swear words, then that is your choice. But then you also need to monitor EVERY site your child visits on the net and EVERY show they watch on the telly and EVERY person they come in contact with. Oh yeah, you may have to home-school them too, as other children may actually swear sometimes. Hey, when I was growing up I heard plenty of cuss words. But I just never used them around my folks because I knew I'd get spanked or have my mouth washed out with soap. Funny how effective it was! Sometimes fear is the best deterrent indeed.

One last thing: CBS Television re-aired the documentary "9/11" a few days ago. Those of you who watched it heard a lot of swearing by the NY firefighters whose stories were told concerning that fateful day. Did that swearing bother me? No it didn't. And yes, my kids watched all of it with me. It helped relay the horrors they faced as they were trying to escape the Twin Towers. That was real life, not a little fantasy world. My kids just know they shouldn't say those words until they are older. I teach my kids the way the world really is, because someday they are going to have to live in it without me by their side. I believe that's called "parenting"!

I think a filter is fine for those who don't mind censorship and want someone to control what they see. Not for me though. What's next, a complete ban on swearing at BetaONE? Wonder how that would go over! I swear if it comes as a natural train of my thoughts and doesn't put someone else down.

And when did BetaONE become a "Family Forum" as stumuzz called it? I guess if that's the case, a no swearing rule really should be in place. Why isn't it? They we could all post links to Disney and Nick and PBSKids and have a jolly 'ole time! I suppose if people are that offended by the swearing, they should probably just move on to another site.

In this country, the First Amendment still means something...doesn't it???

It's highly unlikely that we will censor swearing at this point. It's pretty much a freedom of expression issue.

1. As far as children go: regretfully we cannot be responsible for their web browsing activities. That's a parental responsibility.

2. As far as females go: assuming they are adults I'm sure they can make their own decision on this just like males. It's a male thing about how you believe you should act in front of a lady. In this respect we all differ just as how female's differ on their opinion of this issue. To view it differently than genderless would in a sense be sexist and discrimanatory.

HOWEVER

1. Any abusive behaviour of our members toward another member including but not exclusive to swearing will not be tolerated. If you feel you have been abused report it to an Admin.

2. There is sometimes a point at which it becomes too excessive. You can make a point without going wild with it. Let's use a little discretion on that, ok? ;)

Thank you all for thoughts on this subject and to be honest I have to agree with both sides.:D

@ MinnesotaKid yes i agree with what you are saying , as to the `family Forum`. I did a search and what was said was 'family friendly' link : http://www.betaone.net/forums/index....80ca156e8b7cba.
So I got that a bit wrong , sorry.
And as usual belthazor comes along as of breath of fresh air and sums it all up nicely. :D :P
maybe i'll try not to worry about "does this offend this group or that group to much " and just worry about what bugs me.

Thanks everyone.

Personally.... I usually never swear.. Both online and personally.. Because I humbly believe that it is not proper and breakdown fields of communication. NOT GOOD.. My gf hates me because of it. She thinks it makes me snobby.. I don't think so.. But I just don't unless some really upsets me.

Cyberion

Swearing is a part of human life....if used more often...it would desensitize (sp?!?) people to it. Like nude people walking around in the streets. =) Do I make any sense???? LOL

Who knows! Who cares....

If the swearing is offensive...then I can understand the complaint.

Ma 2 cents

One little reflection here.
At our house we tell our kids not to swear in daily normal situations. The reason for this is that our kids will benefit from beeing able to open their mouths at different situations, with people from different groups of the society. Besides from this they are suppose to swear when things really gets fucked up. There are the situations where you get a kind of relief of shouting out things like faq and SHIT. This function get lost if use them without a reason.
What do you think - I would like to have an opinion/reflection by someone who "always" swear.

Cactus 16th Sep 02 10:59 PM

Swearing become a habbit. Not a good one imho. Like Cyberion pointed out some situations lead people (or at least me) to swear more then they sould (or even want to) just because some people think less of people that never swear. I don't like those situations, but I seem to performe better when I swear at those moments.

Although other people might be offended by swearing everyone should understand that everyone speaks like they feel best. For some it's by swearing a lot, other can live a perfectly happy life without it.

Just my opinion, but I did wanna point out that is become a habbit to swear. And one might wonder if it's a good/nice habbit.
