I just attempted to install Norton Antivirus 2003 Professional Edition on Win XP Pro and received the following Fatal Error dialog box: "Installation ended prematurely because of an error". I have NAV 2002 installed and made attempts to install NAV 2003 Pro with and also with NAV 2002 uninstalled utilizing the Symantec NAV uninstaller. Used RegCleaner, still no luck!
This system is in dual boot configuration with Win 2K SP3 and had no trouble installing NAV 2003 Pro on it. If you have any ideas, let me know. Thanks! :( |
All I can say is I had the same problem, uninstall NAV2002 (manually clean Registry) then try to install NAV2003 and I got the same error. Tried different copies, still no luck. My fix was to install Mcafee VirusScan Pro 7.0 which I actually like so far and seems to be less of a drag on the system especially at startup.
By the way NAV2002 would reinstall no problem. Good Luck |
had same prob tried all mentioned..thought it was bad release....did clean install...decided to try nav2003 pro again...installed fine..
believe nav2002 to be like za leaves some traces that you can not find ;) |
My NAV 2003 works without problems. What u need to do is if u are on XP, go to "Add/Delete Programs" Remove the NAV 2002, it will uninstall almost of anything, then install NAV 2003. Works good. Done that in 3 different machines. XP, XP Home and Win 98 as my server. Works wonders if you completely remove the older versions of NAV 2002.
Awoooo Wile' |
Thanks to all of you that have replied. I will attempt to do the Add/Remove through Windows routine, WECoyote. If this does not work, I will reformat and install Windows with NAV 2003 at the end of the year as my NAV 2002 Live Update subcription expires at that time. I have a gut feeling the NAV.MSI file is in conflict with Win XP SP1. This code was written prior to SP1 and would not be surprised if there is an update after SP1's official release. Just a hunch. <_<

Outback--
I am already on SP1 and the NAV.MSI is not the problem. Possibly that there is some "leftover" NAV 2002 junked-up garbage got stuck in the Registry. You can go to Regedit and take anything that pertains "NAV" and delete them safely (Backup first!!!) and then try to reinstall NAV 2003 again.. IT should work this time. besides, I'm happy with the SP1 and running on Devilsown, all I did was simply do some key changes and tweaks. Thats all it takes. Awoooooo Wile' |
um liveupdate wont install so i can use nortan
tried 2000 2001 2002 2002 pro 2003 2003 pro. says something about not being able to register with liveupdate so it wont be installe then u can use nortan antivirus says please uninstall and reinstall tried about 30 times now really pissing me off lol |
Yea war59312! I had the same problem when I attempted to re-install NAV 2002 after I failed at installing NAV 2003 Pro. I cleaned out the registry and still the same crap! I'm going to wait till I do a clean install. This all takes up too much of my time.
|
yea same here i can live without for awhile even did system restore
no luck oh well |
I'll tell you what, I ended up taking out Norton 2003, everytime I wanted to update a driver or even add a virtual cd norton went off, I believe this version is way to picky, gave problems with messenger, I mean it wouldn't let me do a damn thing, so I went back to 2002
|
This version of Nav 2003 Pro is a piece of crap
I hope to see the retail ISO soon ;) I have this nav 2003 rip installed for a week now and all was fine but today, I try to do a scan and some files are "now" missing and NAV cannot make a scan :o I will uninstall it and replace it by Mcafee virusscan until I have the ISO of NAV 2003 Pro  |
I installed NAV 2003 via Norton SystemWorks 2003 and all is well.

The first I try to install it, the size was avout to 135 megs now I have another version who is 346 megs ;) I think this version is full now  I will reinstall it now |
I installed the smaller file sized version (approx. 135 MB). It includes CleanSweep and some other stuff I don't use, so I just chose NAV 2003 only on install. I believe it has a better interface. I recommend this approach to installing NAV 2003. :)

Did you try to make a scan ? and 2 scan ? After the first scan, I can't make another one :o I receive this message when I try to scan : "unable to open Antivirus\Tasks\mycomp.sca" Very strange !!! Help me please |
I have not performed a system scan as of yet. I will get back to you Bads1 regarding that.
One thing should be noted to all. The Auto-Protect mode should be disabled during system operation. Auto-Protect is all hype. It will give you potential grief no matter what you do, and it sucks resources bigtime! If you shield your system correctly there is no need for it. Secondly, have the tool set up to scan all e-mail (at least all received e-mail) and all downloaded files. This leaves you responsible for scanning any media introduced to your system. If you all do your homework, you will find that this is the up to date way to set up anti-virus software. I have been doing this for years with positive results. :) |
Thanks outbackwb ;)
I'm waiting for your results regarding a scan  |
Here is my experience, hope it helps a bit.
Basically I had some the same problem as greasemonkey, with both NAV 2003 pro and NAV 2003. However, I can install NAV 2003 through systemworks. This made me think that something wrong with my WXP services (like you all, I disabled a lot of services). Therefore, I tried to enable all XP services--set all the disabled services to 'manual'. Guess what, I installed both NAV 2003 pro and NAv 2003 smoothly (not through systemworks 2003, of course). Then I set all the changed services back. Run 2003 pro, liveupdate and full system scan, everything was just fine. However, I could not figure out which service provented me from installing. And I cannot enable the automatic update (maybe because I disabled windows autoupdate, just my guess). Good luck, printer |
Printer, you must be on to something here. Now we need to find out which service is affecting the NAV 2003 install. Thanks for the input.

Bads 1,
I performed a few system scans with the System Works 2003 version of NAV 2003 and can report that it works perfectly. On another note, I also attempted to install NAV 2003 (non-Pro version) and got the same error as the Pro. I will stick with the System Works version of NAV 2003 for now. Thanks to all for your input. This is a wonderful forum! :) |
@ Printer, and all
I have XP Live update "off' And nav automatic update "on" seem this is not this service ;) But my problem is for scanning : I install it from Systemworks or just NAV 2003 Pro and all is fine, I can scan etc...........But after a reboot or two, I always receive the message "unable to open Antivirus\Tasks\mycomp.sca  The file is there but the size is now 0 ko if I uninstall and reinstall, all will be fine again :o I really don't know wich file delete this shortcut ?????Now I can't do a full scan :( |
I'm pretty sure that's just a config file for a scan task. (Maybe the default task).
Try creating another scan task, and use that one for the default scan, or maybe you can save it with the same filename, so it becomes the default |
Ok not sure if i am allowed to ask this, but please feel free to remove it if i am not. I have notron antivirus 2003 and installed it ok, but after a couple of days it says thanks for using the trial period! I thought i had the full version, what am i doing wrong?
Cheers T |
@ Bads,
"nav automatic update" was disabled because I disabled the "task scheduler" service. @outbackwb, The problem I could install NAV pro was because the "terminal service" was disabled. Set to "manual "or "automatic", you should be fine. see also symantec website: hxxp://service4.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/8d071816eedd7cac88256c0e005a96e5/85cb6bf922213a9188256c2c00627ee7?OpenDocument Good luck, printer Last edited by printer at Oct 7 2002, 05:57 PM |
There is also a bad rip of NAV2003 floating round. Its supposed to be final but is a beta version. Go to symantec and search for a file called rnav.exe. It will remove all traces of nav from your system and allow a reinstall. I had the bad rip version and it really messed my system up- after using rnav it installed the good version without any problems
|
The only problem I had when installing it, was afterwards, after the reboot it said something about having to uninstall it and reinstall it. Did this and it worked.
Weird. Running XP SP1. |
