Well I'm finally looking for a new motherboard.

What mother board should I get?

I want to be able to use my P3 600mhz cpu, but be able to upgrade to at least a 1.7ghz P4. Right now I'm just using old pc133 memory. I would like a mother board that is faster. I will need to buy memory for it as well. I need all the basic features. I'm not looking for top of the line. How much $ do you think I should spend on one? I can already get a geforce for free. How about a sound card? So I already have the processor, hard drive, the case, and the grahpics card. And of course a burner and cd-rom drive and the monetor.

Anyone have any good ideas? I am missing anything? A little tired right now.

Thanks,
Will

PS: Thought more people would see it here but move it to Hardware Support if you feel that is needed. :)

i understand war, i'll leave it here since it probably will get more views.

as far as helping you, i don't have a clue.

war59312 27th Aug 02 12:35 AM

ok cool

Menace Inc 27th Aug 02 04:03 AM

Ain't happen. P3 and P4 are 2 different generation of CPUs. You can't use PC133 on the newer P4 Northwood chips. It's is very hard to find the older P4 Will chip match up with a older mobo which accept PC133.

war59312 28th Aug 02 12:48 AM

yea i know

That is an AMD mobo. I have heard good things about this mobo and you won't go wrong with it

RadiationBoy 28th Aug 02 04:18 AM

I'm an AMD guy. but I would highly recommend Asus. I'm using one know and have had no problems. Also I did quite a bit of research a while back and they seemd to have very good reviews.

Gigabyte is also supposed to be very good. I've never used them personaly but I know serveral people who swear by them.

war59312 28th Aug 02 05:09 PM

ok cool

yea i'm going with it then

shit i'm getting it for freeeeeeeeeeeeee :)

damn i have to get a proccessor though lol

I'm running a Soyotek Dragon Ultra Black and it is rock solid. It's an AMD board. I have never had good luck with Asus.

harrytoole 28th Aug 02 09:28 PM

For the money, AMD is by far the better processor.

war59312 29th Aug 02 12:27 AM

so whats the name of the processor

model #? pic info anything? anyone?

harrytoole 29th Aug 02 12:51 AM

that's my mb

It's running an Athlon2100 xp with 512Mb 2700ddr ram and a geoforce4 4200/128mb video card

Darkwolven 29th Aug 02 03:49 PM

Is that the new southbridge that is replacing the defective 686B or is it the pseudo only partly fixed and renamed 686B?

Leech 29th Aug 02 04:17 PM

Hey Harytoole that is a nice MOBO - Now if it did'nt have onboard sound it would be even nicer ;)

war59312 29th Aug 02 06:22 PM

so what should i get?

1.) Athlon2200XP

2.) Athlon2600XP

3.) Athlon2400XP

Price:

2600: $297
2400: $193
2200: $183

Um is it worth it:

Just saw this:

(The AMD Athlon XP processors 2600+ and 2400+ are based on AMD?s state-of-the-art 0.13 micron technology, the processor core previously code named ?Thoroughbred.?)

Sweet:

http://tw.giga-byte.com/products/7vrxp.htm

So my board can handle everything so far:

it's an amd board and i'm getting it for free thats why ;)

RadiationBoy 29th Aug 02 07:56 PM

well if you have the money get the Athlon2600XP it would be the fastest :D. although you can get the 2000+ for $107.00 retail or $97 OEM, from newegg.com. I don't see the 2600+ on there.

EDIT:

just found the 2200+ OEM on newegg for $156.00. You might not want to get OEM though. Because OEM doesn't come with a fan or documentation. and I don't think it has a warrenty, not sure about that though.

I would go for the 2100. For almost 50 $ cheaper than the 2200. The 2600 is still too much $. There is a 2700 coming out in October.

rikytik 29th Aug 02 11:01 PM

I'm shopping too. Maybe a Lian-Li ATX box and ASUS A7V333 board. I found this link interesting for guys like me who have always used off the shelf pc's.

war59312 30th Aug 02 03:31 AM

Well guess I'll go with the 2400+ just becuase it has the new state-of-the-art 0.13 micron technology, the processor core previously code named ?Thoroughbred.?

It's only $19 more than the 2100+. You think I should?

My cousin has the 1900+ and its damn sweet.

How fast is the 2400+? Have not seen speed or anything.

Thanks,
Will

I have a lian-li pc60 case with an asus a7a266 board - It's pretty nice, I'm in the process of building another one. Having a hard time deciding what I want - It will def be an AMD system, Intel SUX !! :D

Darkwolven 30th Aug 02 03:18 PM

I agree with Harry. 2100 for around $115. (Check pricewatch) The faster CPU just isn't worth the cost vs performance in scale. 2200 is nearly $50 more and you only get about 5% gain in performance IF that! The chart above clearly shows only a 10% gain between 2000 and 2400 AMD's.

i'll check pricewatch too :)

You could also try the Abit KX7-333 or the KX7-333r. The R stands for teh RAID. I'm running the KX7-333 with the 2100+ on Win2k and 512 megs of DDR. Very fast and very stable!!

the_chiller 1st Sep 02 10:53 PM

the 166MHz FSB version of the Athlon XP is coming out in a few months (i think), maybe it's best to wait for that. Or better yet, wait till next year.... by then you could get a ClawHammer :P :D

Athlon XP 2200+ and above is the best choice as of now, it has the newer codename b/c of its smaller .13 core.

For Mobos, you can't go wrong with ASUS or GIGABYTE.

war59312 2nd Sep 02 12:11 AM
