I currently am running Win XP SP1 v.1102 and Office 2000. I just attempted to upgrade to Office XP, and while installing Office SP1, I got an error message stating "Error applying this patch to file C:\Config.msi\pt1c.tmp. It has probably already been updated by other means and can no longer be modified by this patch."
What do I do? If I cancel, the install fails, if I hit retry I get the same error.... |
Maybe you have to uninstall office 2000 before installing office xp ;)
I'm running Xp with SP1 1102 too and I have Office Xp with the SP2  Or try to install SP2 not Sp1 |
Good idea, I will try the uninstall. SP@ will not work unless SP1 is already installed.
Thanks |
didn't work, same error. Oh well, might as well stay on 2000

Hum...............
Is this a real copy of office Xp ? Did you apply a patch ? If you have a patch for it, maybe the problem is there  |
When Office XP came out and some people got hold of a type of key that doesn't allow it to be activated (similar to an XP Corp Key) when people upgraded to OfficeXP SP1 those types of errors were common. The way to do it is to slipstream the SP into Office and install. Some notes around about how to do it. That will solve your problems.

Hi,
I am pretty sure that your copy of Office XP is a "prerelease" corporate version that leaked prior to Office going RTM. This version of Office XP also gives the same error when attempting to apply SP1 or SP2 patches. You need to get the full corporate version and your problems should go away. Tomboy |
Thanks all, I will get a different version tonight.

Hold on jefexp...
Some Office XP versions can only be upgraded using the administrative versions of SP1 and SP2... so check if your update procedure is indeed correct. |
HamsterX
your right ,I could only use the Admin update, slipstreamed the SP2 no problem |
Thanks for this info, I think I also need another version - Had the same problem ;)
|
How do I slipstream into SP2? Wouldn't be easier just to download a newer version od Office? Would I have problems in the future if I continue with the version I have now, and the upgrade again when a newer version comes out?
Thaks, again, this has been very helpful. |
check out the tutorial section, there is a good walkthrough in how to slipstream SP2 :)
|
When I slipstreamed SP1 into Office, I have had no trouble upgrading to SP2.
