I am helping a friend setup their computer that has been in use for some time now. They are in need of a good antivirus.....So what is a good one for someone that don't know much about a computer?

AVG Free is a good one. auto updates, and auto schedule.

Avast Home Edition....one of the best free antivirus proggies...

I prefer Norton AV, dead easy to use and 1 years free subscription when you buy the product. I know a lot of people slate Symantec product's but it's what i advise all my new customers to use.

Yes, I've been using Norton AV since version 1.0 (DOS!), never had anything it couldn't handle, McAfee would be a close second choice though...

norton is a resource hog...DoGG, you should know better!

If your friend has an older & slower system but has broadband, I'd have him hookup a router for the hardware firewall alone. Then use the free online scanners like housecall along with a simple, basic & free software firewall like ZoneAlarm.

Years ago software & hardware firewalls were looked as only needed or used by the tech heads, but it's really a must for anyone hooked up to the internet.

I've found too many antivirus program that might detect a virus but is then unable to fix or delete it. A good firewall is your first and most important defence!
