Hello,
I just buy a new UPS and I want to know how many peoples are running there pc with a UPS ? And if this really reliable ? This is mine: ![]() Thanks for your comments |
I am not currently and wish I was for the simple fact that my electricity here likes to blink off for a microsecond now and then for no good reason just enough to reset everything. I do however use a very high rated surge arrest. An UPS is always an excellent idea even for the home user if it's in you buget.
|
I have one because, like mciwd, I live in an area that must have purchased its equipment just before Noah set sail. There are frequent, very short, outages.
The UPS has worked flawlessly for about 2 years. When the power dips, you can't evev spot it on the monitor. I have CPU, Monitor, and Modem fed of the UPS. when this one gives up the ghost, I will hurry out to get another one. |
we have one.
I think the cheapest model. It only gives like 15minutes of power. The 2 times its been needed, it worked fine. :). At the time, the monitor/computer and a lamp was hooked up to the battery. The monitor and lamp was kinda flickering but it gave me enough time to power down the system and stuff. The power hasnt been off since we got cable, so now its monitor/computer/cable modem. I want the power to go out now, because I remember reading somwhere that when they're power in they're neighborhood went off...he got a lot of extra pseed on his cable modem. I wanna see how much bandwidth I should have if noone else is on :D. Anywhoooooooooooooo. To answer ur question. Yes. It works. :). |
Yes, Bads, I have one too @ home and @ work - they work great during the brownouts (rolling power fluctuations) that are pretty common in my area. :)

i got one but haven't hooked it up yet.
|
Good to hear you got one Bads, had mine for about 2 years and can't even notice the difference when the power goes out.
Does anyone know if it would just blow the UPS if a surge/lightening strike came down the line or would it pass through the UPS into the pc and blow both? Greetz, da Wizard |
Like JD I have 1 @Work, but also one @Home. With even the slightest dip in voltage, my system would reset, and a lot of open files would get damaged. Well, no more!
@da Wizard: It would only blowup your UPS. That one of the reasons UPS-ses were invented. The alternating current that comes out off the socket will be converted to direct current, and then converted back to alternating current. Cheers! |
Thanks all for yor excellent comments,
I hope to receive mine this week from insight  |
I just install my ups today ;)
But xp don't find any driver for it :o I have a yellow flag under battery :( |
Hya Bads1,
If it's an APC SmartUPS there should be Win2K software that also work with WinXP. Hopes this helps. Cheers! |
Thanks Le Cactus,
I have download the latest Power Chute personnal edition today and now I'm downloading the business edition of Power Chute ;) I hope this one will be ok for me  |
uhh, you have to have software for those things? i have a conext 300va and it didn't come with any software.
|
you guys sure have alot of budget for your pc system. over here, maybe 1 in a 1000 a home user would buy a UPS...
normally only companies uses them for servers units only. not even for staffs. good life huh... |
um yeap i got one too
a huge one supplies up to 1 hour of power - my computer, monter, printer, scanner, 19in color tv, fan, and speakers well a ups wont always save u my mother board, modem, grahpics card, and speakers got fried once already...lucky i had warnety on all of them :) however my friend was not so lucky his awhole computer got fried i mean everything luckly his mom and dad make enough money so they bought a new one but the worst thing was that his room was destoryed two of the walls were on the ground in pieces lighting hit his room they said if he would have been home at the time he would have been dead - 100% garntee lucky basterd - got a nice damn computer and tv (fullly sourround system) from his parents and insurenece so it might not save u all the time but it does work still i dont use my computer in a storm - thats just freaking stupid cya |
Cannot imagine being without one.
If you have a decent PC, and you use it, buy one right away. |
How can you be without one today?
Cannot see it myself, advise everyone to get it with a PC right away. |
war i don't use my computer during a storm either.
|
I use them at work, but not at home. I've never had anything but problems with the low end APC models, they always seem to go out after a year. If I were to get something I could trust, I'd go with something on the higher end.
|
I've thought about getting a UPS just for the line conditioning to protect my hardware; I don't need one for data protection or server operations. Unfortunately, it seems that to get good line conditioning and surge protection I'd have to spring for a heavy-duty, expensive model and I don't want to spend that kind of money.
Advice? |
"well it might just save your ass"
|
A ups is as necessary as any other part of your pc. It WILL save your pc at some point from being cooked!
|
Here in Sri Lanka, an UPS is much more important than a GeForce4!
We get power cuts very often, say, once a week or may be trice an hour! I've got a LEUMS 500VA a cheap little fella, but I can use it upto 15 minutes because the energy comsumption of my PC is very low compared to those biggie AthlonXPs or Intel P4s. So, I can always shut the computer down in time, if the power failure is more than expected. |
UPS are always great for Uninterrupted Power Supply (what UPS really means )
I haven't faced a sudden power failure here in Australia and not using a UPS atm. It is on its way to here after next year :) @Bads_1, your UPS is great! APCC UPS are built-in supported in Windwos XP and Windows 2000, and will be easy to configure! |
Hmm. I've only been using a surge suppressor for the past 5 years that I've owned my PC. Had it on during storms...and pretty much 24/7 (except when I go out of town). I guess I've been lucky so far!
I WILL be getting an UPS when I buy/build my new computer in a few months. Right now, I'm still trying to make a decision on chipset/motherboard to go with. |
I'm curious as to WHY people think these are necessary? The only thing they give in addition to good surge suppression is temporary uninterruption in power supply. If you have decent power supply in your area, the chances are very slim that a power surge will cause damage. A standard surge suppressor will handle almost anything including lightning. Most likely to happen would be a power outage during a disk process like writing to hard disk or probably the worst would be while flashing firmware, bios, etc. They are indeed nice of you do a lot of flashing and have many brown outs/power outages, but hardly necessary. I have a good surge suppressor with maximum suppression you can get and $100,000 damage insurance with it, so if in the very slim likelyhood anything did happen, I would be getting a FREE computer upgrade. :P  :D
