Hi guys,
Update list from you guys and others who have emailed me. I have found so far the following bugs with this service pack. This is compiled from friends' feedback and my own. Anyone else?? Please add here. Warning!!!!!! - Now advise do not install SP3 Last updated (02/09/02) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Problem: Application popup: Explorer.EXE - Application Error : The instruction at "0x77fcb8f4" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written". ---> System will crash after doing this more frequently until it no longer boots. ---> Serious problem as of 302 emails thus far about this problem!!) Solution1: Format and reinstall Windows 2000 SP2 (do not use SP3) ** DIRECTX GAMES ALSO LOOK HERE: Solution2: - Create two new directories called "tmp" and "temp" in the route of your windows installation. - Go to Control Panel>System>Advanced> - Select "Environment Vairables" Option. - Edit the entries that talk about "tmp" or "temp" to refect the drive letter and directory name where you located these. - 4 entries should be edited. point them all at the same places (User and system vairables) e.g. C:\temp and C:\tmp. - In most cases this forced windows to stop writing this error message. No idea why the default install directories report this problem again with SP3. - Don't forget to reboot your PC after all this. (this will also fix cache problems in Games using directX) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Bug: ISP dialup may stop validating correctly after install of SP3 Solution: Uninstall SP3, update your dialer (if possible and reinstall) 3. Bug: Windows Update may stop allowing you to install updates reporting an error after selecting your updates and clicking "install". Solution: ?????????? 4. Bug: Audio drivers of some sound cards stop functioning correctly. Soultion: Uninstall SP3, update your drivers (if possible and then reinstall) 5. Bug: Blue screen of death on boot of some computers - specifically Dell. Soultion: Format your PC and install after a clean system restore. 6. Bug: After install SP3, the opera no longer work. I even re-installed the opera, but the same thing. I refuse to run, and no error messages. Solution: ???????????????/ 7. Bug: IE (5.5) hangs when waiting for login (to secured network sites) window to display. Solution: ???????????????/ 8. Bug: Outlook Express (5.50.4807.1700) extremely slow starting up. Solution: ???????????????/ 9. User Report 1: I just installed SP3, and now, no matter what I do, I can't get the web view stuff to show up in Windows Explorer. "Enable Web Content in Folders" _IS_ checked, and the window is more than wide enough. Solution: this all has to do with MS doing away with NON-Signed WebView templates, so this is the fix...... simply rename your default.htt file to folder.htt , and the do the same for the folder.htt file and rename it to default.htt .... you'll have to do this so that you dont overwrite them by accident. but it worked for me, and i'm hoping it will work for you too. 10. Bug: Neowin.net Board - Sp3 Broke My Dvd Drive Solution: Uninstall SP3 11. Bug: Neowin net Board - Cardbus Card in Docking (IBM Dock) can not be installed after installing SP3. This update resolves the "CardBus PC Cards May No Longer Function on Specific Docking Stations After You Apply SP3" issue in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and is discussed in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q327269 Solution: Download here Can anyone else add to this list of suggest solutions or bugs???? Doubt they will do a SP4, maybe a SP3a or something to fix the bugs.

In respose to the last post.
the first point: - still does not work... not reported by 18 emails to me. the second point: - restore off CD. the third point: 2 people reported this issue, I am glad it works for you. At present most people have said they are going back to SP2. Cheers Hawk |
Have you checked news://microsoft.public.win2000.general? I only use win2000 on a couple of servers so I don't read up on it much anymore.
I just hope they don't screw up SP1 for WinXP the same way B) |

Hello all,
check here for more info: h**p://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,477292,00.asp and here's some excerpts from the article: August 19, 2002 Microsoft's Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 Rolls Out Trouble By Timothy Dyck Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 was released earlier this month, consolidating more than a year of security patches and other bug fixes since Service Pack 2 shipped. It, along with related documentation, can be found at h**p//www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp3/default.asp. SP3 includes the contents of Service Pack 1, Service Pack 2 and Windows 2000 Security Rollup Package Version 1, as well as many additional fixes. As such, it should be applied but only after appropriate testing. The service pack introduces three components: Microsoft Corp.'s automatic update agent (which, if configured to apply updates automatically, will unfortunately also reboot machines automatically); Microsoft Installer 2.0; and a seriously ineffective tool to hide the presence of Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and Windows Media Player. Please check it out and hope this helps some....:) (at least make sure you turn off auto-updates) ;) |
Well I cannot say I used it long enough to find any bugs. I can report that I did a slipstream of Server and a clean install on a box unchanged since SP2 and all of the problems I ever had with 2k on that box were non-existant with SP3
|
No problems at all.
For me, with my luck, it is unbelievable. |
After reading this thread I have only installed it on my development server. Sometimes get a "Memory could not be written" error on it (Windows 2000 Server - .NET Frameworks - IIS - SQL Server 2000).
Thanks NightHawk for the heads up. I'll wait 'til Microsoft comes up with a solution before I install it on my two production servers. |
# 6. Bug: IE (5.5) hangs...as posted by us & added to your updated list -o-bugs was fixed by clearing our auto-complete data & disabling auto-complete. Never had the problem @ all before SP3, though. Haven't tried reallowing auto-complete, though, to see if it's really fixed...
OE still slow though, despite applying a few different suggested fixes for the problem. Is it possible to upgrade OE 5 to 6, without upgrading IE? Last edited by ateizzynuff at Today at 1:31 pm |
ateizzynuff,
Try Uninsitalling IE then reinstalling it if you have IE remove option in "add and remove". Due to the fact that Outlook and IE are integrated and IE is integrated into the OS, there is slill not much of a solution. However, soon to be released SP1 for IE6 does speed up outlook so see if you can obtain a copy from the forums. Hope this helps. |
I havnt had any of those probs, i did go to M$ and do a sys update before i installed sp3. worked for me...
|

installed win2k sp3 (pro and server) on about 8 machines and SO FAR no probs. hope this luck doesnt run out ;-) peace out |
