Am I the only one who can't download zip or rar files with this thing??
I've looked all thru the security and download settings and can't find it  Gotta be something simple I'm missing... ![]() |
No problems here, working fine.

Security > Internet > Medium

I don't get it....everything else works great....just not zip's or rar's.... <_<
Tried everything I could think of, disabled firewall (XP's), turned off KAV autoprotect...still won't work. I can download them with DAP, just not IE...And it can't be the sites, I've tried several, including here at good 'ol B1 :( Any other ideas?? |
Looks & sounds like blockage from your restricted sites zone!
I get that dialog box as well on one of my boxes... Check under "managed sites", privacy tab >>> edit >> Do you use spywareblaster, spybot S&D, BHO Demon or similar? ilke war suggested... |
Well are you running sp2 rc2 or some pre final build of sp2? If so a few builds have activex problems. Which yes can and does interfere with downloading. So upgrade to sp2 rtw.
If your already running sp2 rtw or sp1 then more info is needed. List a few sities you cant download zip or rar from for example. If you dont want to post it in private just pm me and see what I can figure out. But more than likly the sites you are downloading from are resecirted as already stated. Anyways you can also see what happens when you turn Security > Internet > LOW. See if that has any effects and if so we can work from there. I also would look in Folder Options > File Types and .zip and .rar for anything strange under the advanced tab. If none of that works. Search for spyware and ad aware. Could be spyware trying to stop you from downloading a fix, however missguided atempt it maybe be. I personlly had to deal with one of these as of late on my brothers pc which would close IE every time you tried to download a .zip,.rar, or a .exe file. Or if the title window had something to do with spyware removel. And even worse google.com was completely disabled. lol So who knows. And i'm sure you have tried with no appz or serivces running but if not try that. Some running program or process could be messing up ie. Well good luck. Will |
Thanx for the suggestions Will....
I can't download zip or rars from any site, not even attached files here at B1, I can if I right click and select download with DAP...but not IE...Everything was fine till I installed SP2 (rtw). I've tried with AV off, etc...Only things I've done as far as IE security is concerned is immunized the system using Spybot, but that never mattered b4...However, I do have a strange thing going on, it won't let me lower the IE security level to low...get a windows popup stating "the recommend setting is medium, please select a level of Medium or higher" and it goes back to medium.... I've scanned this system with Adaware Pro, Spybot, and Kaspersky AV all with no problems... I just don't get it  |
Bump :(

try logging on as administrator and see if you can change the security level from that account.
Try this: From the affected account press the start button and then run program, type gpedit.msc in the run program window and press enter. Expand the User Configuration tree, expand the Administrative Templates tree, the windows components tree, the internet explorer tree and the internet control panel tree. Expand the Security Page tree then click on the Internet Zone Icon. In the right hand pane look for "Allow File Downloads" double click and change the setting to enabled- it should look something like he attached image. Rebbot and try downloading a zip or rar. |
Nice one. Did not think of that last night. Yeap hopefully that will work.
If all else fails reinstall IE. http://support.microsoft.com/view/tn.asp?kb=318378 |
Thanx for the help guys...unfortunately, still no go...Not in a position to reformat and reinstall anytime soon, so I guess I'll live with it for now... ;)
