When I right click on a folder or try to delete it Explorer crashes, any ideals. Running XP Pro.
I don't know what I did but it's working now. What happened was that I made a new folder in My Pictures folder and couldn't get rid of it. It just started working again. The only thing I did to clear it up was to delete another folder that I didn't need, that must have cleared the fault. Started doing it again, trying to delete a folder in Documents and Settings. |
Have you tried restarting? You know MS... sometimes a good ol reboot will solve the problem. Also, have you tried deleting the folder from a DOS prompt? Just a few things to check out :)
|
I've restarting and it didn't help, I havn't tried the DOS prompt. It will let me drag the folder to the recycle bin and delete it that way.
|
If it goes back to doing it after a full scan etc...then turn off the computer for a short while and then see if upon starting up it works ok.
Then you may want to boot it with winternals cd and see if it can be deleted that way Thanks Dudelive |
Spyware or virus perhaps?
|
No spyware or virus that I've found. It doesn't seem consistant, sometimes it works right and then it will start again. I don't have to try deleting a file for it to crash, I've found that just right clicking a folder or sometimes just left clicking a folder to highlight it and doing nothing more that letting my cursor hover above the file menu or clicking the file menu causes a crash. I'll try to shut it down while at work today and see what happens after a "rest".

My explorer exe always crashing since SP1. Open your RECYCLER folder on all your drives and see what one has 2 or 3 trashbins in it. The way I've been clearing it up is delete the trash bins on all drives and reboot. Mine gets so bad any right click brings up a blank desktop and then everything resets. Haven't figured out why get multiple trash bins though.

You get a fresh recycle bin for each reinstall you perform- i had 8 on 1 drive not long ago, they yook up over 30 Gig of space! You also get an extra set of restore points in your System Volume Information folder in the root of each drive, these can take gigabytes of space on any partition that you don't reformat frequently.
What's in the folder you are right clicking on (pictures, movies,program files etc) ? What folder view options have you got set? I found hat right clicking a folder with a LOT of jpeg's or bitmaps in can crash explorer if you have faulty memory. not saying yours is faulty though! |
Any folder I right click...doesn't matter, even right clicking a txt file will crash explorer. View options...show everything. I delete all recycle bins at fresh load, but still keep getting multiple bins on a drive.
|
Now thats just plain strange. Will do some searching for you.
EDIT: As a side thought- what graphics card are you using and what Utils do the drivers add to your context menu? i have an Nvidia card in this box and the ASUS Nvidia drivers install some damn buggy apps into the context menu. When i install their drivers on my system i can't right click a folder without getting an "Nview Failed To Initialise" error. |
Well clean installed last night, everything was doing good. Loaded programs and all good. Loaded Spy Sweeper 3 this morning and went did some things I had to take care of. Came back and right click was crashing again. Thought about what you said DoG about context menu. Took SpySweeper out and all seems good again. Maybe certain items in context menu mess things up?

Do you have ACDsee installed ?
This can be the problem |
@HotRod
I think that you found my problem too. I uninstalled Spy Sweeper 3 and everything's working for now. I'll keep checking to make sure, but it looks good so far. Thanks for everyones help and imput. I'll update if anything changes. Vinnie |
I've also had problems with Spy Sweeper, but not crashing IE. It also slows down my system and I'm running an AMD 2.10 GHz with 1.5 GB of RAM :angry:

It was crashing Windows Explorer on me, not I.E. Still working good after un-installing. I've also heard other people were having problems slowing their system down. I guess that I'll stick with Spybot and SypwareBlaster right now.
|
Whilst my Nvidia WHQL drivers still crash when i try to right click an AVI file :P Even after installing the hotfix!
Glad it helped, some of the programs we install are really not good for our systems :( |
THANK GOODNESS for my Macintosh.. :lol: :P
|
I've had this same problem for months now..seems to come and go,whether after a fresh format, sp2. rtm. or whatever..I clean my cookies, spyware, trojans and everything else at least once a day, so I doubt its any of that..
happens on my wife's pc too, and she doesnt do any of the stuff we do here.. |
@wase4711
It was Spy Sweeper 3 that was causing my problems, the right click context menus. |
i wish it was that easy for me Vinnie; it happens at different times, not just from one app or directory..
Sometimes, when I am at my desktop, just right clicking the start buttom causes it.. I have read about so many things that might cause it, I dont have an idea where to start, especially when it happens at different times for me... |
If you're running Spy Sweeper 3, I'd go in to options and disable the context menus, might be worth a try. Mine was doing strange things also, never knew when it would crash.
