Over the last few weeks i have been buying new parts to upgrade the old system i had, i ended with this:

Code:

P4 3.2 gig Prescott
1 GB (4 x 256MB) Corsair XMS PC4000 DDR 500 Memory (Running in Dual Chan Mode)
MSI 875P Neo FISR MoBo
AKASA king Copper 901XT CPU Cooler
ThermalTake Xaser V Damier V6000A Case
Enermax 460W PSU

I'm planning on phasing out 2 of my 160 Gig IDE drives and installing 2 250 Gig WD Serial ATA drives along with a decent (ATI) graphics card- the Nvida FX series just don't impress me at all TBH. Am also looking at the ThermalTake Silent Pure Power 550 W PSU, simply because the Enermax doesnt have enough 4 pin power outlets.

Can anyone think of anything else i can do with it?

On a side note, the ThermalTake case looks extremely nice BUT the 5 fans and the fan/temperature display module are a pain in the donkey. The cables will NEVER look neat untill i start hard wiring them with a soldering iron and while the side mounting internal HDD bays look good they are a pain in the donkey to get IDE cables to- hence the move to serial ATA drives.

I would love to have specifikations like that. Five fans... noisy? For some time I have been looking at this:
Code:

http://www.coolpc.com.au/store/index.php?item=628
Click to enlarge the oicture. Cool.

DoG 31st May 04 01:11 AM

oh wow, that looks awesome! Wouldnt mind something like that myself.
Yes, the 5 fans are noisy. you can controll the speeds which does lessen the noise but the system temp slowly creeps up if you do that :(

SlickVic78 31st May 04 04:57 PM

@ DoG
Yeah, 5 fans seem to be about right. :) I to have 5 fans running inside my rig. If I didn't, I'd probably be able to cook breakfast on it! :lol1:.

What are you temps? Idle and on full load?

@ unicorn,
That cooling rig is sick. Wish I had one of them... but I don't think I'd have the room for it... Ah, I guess I can always make room for something as cool as that! :D

It's at around 30C idle and 56C Full load. I had better results from my old case with this CPU Cooler than i do with this one, the other case kept the temps down to 25C idle and 46C at full load. Saying that, all the cables and stuff in there restrict the air flow something rotten, when i can get them soldered and routed properly it may help. The instructions for the dozzens of cables suck! I don't suppose that having to have some of the cables strewn over the mobo helps- but there just isn't enough play in the cables to get them neat and tidy :(

This is really hot :o

I have only a P4 2.0 ghz and the temp is never too high ;)

What is the temp in your room ?

DoG 31st May 04 06:40 PM

Room temp is 31C, got a few pc's in here and the AC is bust :(

Bads 31st May 04 06:44 PM

Ok,

Here the room themp is only 23 C

unicorn 31st May 04 07:05 PM

@SlickVic78: Yup, it's sick. And expensive, and cool. Above all it's silent.

Silence is a luxuary. Of course everyone judges for themselves. Is it worth the money? I would say yes.

Don't forget that your relatives and friends will be much more impressed by this cooling tower than they ever will be from some cryptic MoBo codes. Then you can talk a little about environment pollutions and noise...

I have 3 computers running in the same location (a corner of my room)... Doesn't help with keeping things cool at all... This part of my room is almost 10 degrees hotter than the other side of the room! :(

I have a 4th computer in my room that I only turn on when I am testing out applications and websites I am working on, which adds a few more degrees to the room when turned on.

I tell ya... Heat is our computer's worst enemy! Besides that, there's dust! :lol1: I ended up blowing out my rig the other day and the amount of dust that came out was scarey! It did knock off a few degrees though. My current temps on my main rig usually fall into the same range as your computer temps, DoG.

I have an Antec LAN case (the glossy black model) with a single large whisper quiet fan at the back. 2.8GHZ P4, 1-SATA, 2 IDE 7200rpm Maxtor's, plus DVD and CD burners. Never had temp problems. Best case I ever owned. About ready to install a second SATA drive.

The cpu is running 31C at idle and up to 40C under load. The P4C800 mobo seems to stay at 30.

Second box is a Lian-Li with an Asus AV78X and a 1.8GHZ AMD ship.

hotter. cpu idles at 51C and goes to 55C under load. Mobo 34C

Use the stock cpu mounted fan in both cases.

Jarod888 31st May 04 10:12 PM

I am building a new system too.
so far this is what I have:
ThermalTake Lanfire Xaser series VM 2000A _http://www.thermaltake.com/xaserCase/lanfire/vm2000a.htm
Silent PurePower 480w W0010 _http://www.thermaltake.com/purepower/W001011.htm
Plextor 712a DVD Burner _http://www.plextor.com/english/products/712A.htm

I am planning on going with the:
Asus p4p800 delux with a 3.0 or 3.2 prescott chip,
4 gigs of memory,
an nvidia gforce fx 5950
2 serial ata 250 gig hds, 400's would be nice
another dvd drive, probably sony or plextor, Plextor PX-116A Black(can not locate one in the US)
a good sound card
probably 4 7200 rpm 250 gig hd
some bose speakers
a 17 or 19 inch flat panel monitor, LCD
I am also going to use the rounded ide cables, and get a new keyboard and mouse.

Well it should be an awesome system when i get it all together!!

I have a Antec 1080AMG (http://www.antec-inc.com/pro_details...p?ProdID=91082) with 5 Fans and I have to say it is pretty noisy. That water cooling system suggested by unicorn looks pretty cool. So DoG, you don't need to mess around with heaps of power cables for the fans.

Btw, how efficient you think these water cooling systems are? How about a rough idea of temperature drop? (compared to traditional fans). E.g.
At CPU 0%: With Fans: ?? degrees Celcius. With water cooling: ?? degrees Celcius.
At CPU 100%: With Fans: ?? degrees Celcius. With water cooling: ?? degrees Celcius.

~*McoreD*~ (and others):

The Zalman Reserator is a water cooling system built without any fans. There is a pump in the system to move the water. It's totally noiseless, at least until you lean yuor ear against the "water cooling tower" - then you can feel small vibrations and a little noise is heared (or assiciated with the vibrations). t a distance of 2 or 3 feet away noone will notice a sound.
Is it effective? Yes, it beats all fan systems. A high-end traditional water cooling system is more effective. here are some figures:

Code:

AMD 1833 MHz producing a heat effect of 68 W

Silent fans: 52
Ordinary fans: 46
Reserator: 40
High tech water cooling incl fans: 33

AMD 2083 MHz producing a heat effect of 98 W

Silent fans: 61
Ordinary fans: 50
Reserator: 44
High tech water cooling incl fans: 37

AMD 2333 MHz producing a heat effect of 141 W

Silent fans: N/A (can't handle the heat)
Ordinary fans: N/A (can't handle the heat)
Reserator: 51
High tech water cooling incl fans: 42

The figures are taken from a test made 2 years ago I think, Temperatures are measured in degrees Celsius, test moment is after 200 minutes 100% load of the processor, source is:
CODE]http://www.sweclockers.com/html/recension/rec_040314_zalman_reserator.php[/code]

The AMD processors produces lot of heat as you know and I think this test show you that it works allright. As they compared a given amount of heat produced with different systems it is fair enough. The "High tech water cooling system" (my translation) mentioned was an Asetek Antarctica with Waterchill Reservoir.

Dog,

You may want to consider an Antec case. In my experience they are the best in regards to insulating noise.

I am running an AMD with 4 fans in my bedroom and I sleep like a baby.

My Antec is the bronze. The piano black is also VERY quiet
