What the best program for protecting folders with password protection in Windows XP?
B) Last edited by Vinnie at Jul 16 2002, 06:12 PM |
i don't know but would like to know too.
by the way, moving to software support since its asking about software. |
i tried a while back a shareware program that wasnt really worth it. xp is a multiuser OS, so if you logoff between use and someone else uses the pc and you want to keep them out, for example, you could use NTFS security options, if the disk is NTFS formatted, to prevent access to said folder. you could use this to prevent access to um... "sensitive materials." disable "Use simple file sharing" in the folder options menu and allow access to only the user you wish. this isnt a password protection program but it does basically the same thing; give those who need access to files access and prevents access to those who dont need it. hope this helps.

this is a really simple but effective way to protect folders:
(can be a bit long winded but if your determined to protect a folder then its worth considering) ok PROTECTING FOLDER: 1. you have a folder called "jakesnake" (jakesnake with out quotes) that you want to protect 2. run command.com (to get to MSDOS) 3. run the command ren to rename the file as follows: ren jakesnake jakesnake+ALT+180 you get something like jakesnake_ appear in windows then in windows when you try to click to the folder jakesnake_ it wont let you UNPROTECT FOLDER: 1. you have a folder called "jakesnake_" (jakesnake_ with out quotes) that you want to unprotect 2. run command.com (to get to MSDOS) 3. run the command ren to rename the file as follows: ren jakesnake+ALT+180 jakesnake you can now access the folder in windows im pretty sure the ALT+180 ASCII character can be changed to any in the series that make the "box like sides" enjoy jakesnake :D |
A good old trick Jake, Iv'e always used ALT+255 as the hidden character , Good quick way to keep windows out.
Saying that I just tried in XP and it didn't work :( , like it does under 9x. Last edited by Raid762 at Jul 17 2002, 06:50 PM |

sorry guys,
don't have XP on any of the machines at work so couldnt test it before i posted jake ;) |
Hey Jake, will it work with NT4, thats what I use at work and it would come in handy there as well.
|
hmm, if i can remember the name of the program there is a program that can restrict access to folders, programs, control panel applets, anything you can think of on a per user basis, i think it is called OnGuard, i'm not sure who makes it or if there is a version that works with XP, i haven't looked at it in a while, *goes to look*

found the link, not sure if it's 2k / xp compatible though, it's good software, my high school used it and it's damned near hack proof, believe me, i tried, hehe, a few times :D damn, nevermind, i just tried it myself, it will install in compatibility mode but it won't work :( Last edited by Sephiroth at Jul 17 2002, 12:48 PM |
what i really need is to be able to password protect a folder then be able to put it on a cd and keep it password protected. then however i give it to can just enter the password without having to have the program installed.

I'm using Folder Guard Pro 5.4. on XP. Personally I really like it. I have a drive with all music on it (mp3). I protected it made it read only, and hidden.
The wierd and cool thing is that Windows Media Player cannot access it, nothing can it looks blank even in device manager it says the full amount of space as free, except a playlist I made of it with winamp, even when protected winamp can still play the music on it using the playlist. |
I use the latest version of Steganos ;)
Really a good product for encryption |

Why not use the encrypting file system that comes with XP?
|
yup, EFS provided that it is a NTFS partition.
|
And if it's a NTFS partition, you can also set permissions on the folder/share.
