Shutdown Windowx XP Faster
===========================

When a user shuts down Windows XP, first the system has to kill all services currently running.
Every once in a while the service does not shut down instantly and windows gives it a change to shut down on its own before it kills it.
This amount of time that windows waits is stored in the system registry.
If you modify this setting, then windows will kill the service earlier.

To modify the setting, follow the directions below:

Code:

Start Regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
Click on the "Control" Folder.
Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
Right click on it and select Modify.
Set it a value lower than 2000 (Mine is set to 200).

Anyone a novice at messing about with the registry, ought to make a backup :P
Don't blame me if you mess your system up !

jake :)

Code:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop]
"ForegroundLockTimeout"=dword:00000000
"AutoEndTasks"="1"
"HungAppTimeout"="200"
"MenuShowDelay"="0"
"WaitToKillAppTimeout"="200"
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="200"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="200"

Hi GSD, I don't know if it is only for me, but the ClearPageFileAtShutdown value is already 0 in my Registry. I haven't installed any Tweak utilities nor I did play with the Registry earlier. Can anybody please confirm if they got the same result or not? Thanks. :)

If you want to make a dramatic decrease in shutdown time, try the "Clear Page File At Shutdown" hack. It clears by default
Me thinks there's a clue there. ;)

Umm....that comment was directed at IB and ~*McoreD*~.

Don't see any reason for you to get upset by that. I don't think they will. ;)

That's right belthazor. Yes I understood that post was directed to us and not to GSD. You don't need to get upset by that, GSD =)

But now comes all these confusions. Let's debug it please. lol.

If Windows clears pagefile by default = true And My dault ClearPageFileAtShutdown value = 0 Then
should I change it to 0 to not clear it?
Seems not logical to me.

I guess after SP1 or something it is not clearing the PageFile by default anymore, so I don't have to worry about it. :)

And by the way, Will
You had "MenuShowDelay"="0" in your Shutdown Windowx XP Faster reg and I was wondering why my Start menus were popping up soo fast....which I hated and that was the very reason why I didn't use TweakXP. But now I know how to control it...so thanks for that. :)

Yea some people like zero or 200. I like zero. :)

I've been using those hacks for ever, and they do make a big diff;

if you use XP SP1 or above, and your "clearpagefileatshutodown" value is 0, then your pagefile is NOT being cleared; if the value is 1, then it WILL be cleared, and your pc will take longer to shut down.

I'll be glad to explain the others in detail also, but they are pretty obvious as to what they do;

try setting the menu show delay to 100 or so, and it wont flash through quite as fast
