I've been using a 2.4X Sony DRU 500 since they first came out. It has updated firmware for the new 4X disks.

I used up the last of my Memorex 4X DVD +R's and couldn't find more. Got some no-name 1-4X blanks. Movie discs burned on these discs showed video drop out and some jerkyness, making them unpleasant to watch. I got some -R 1-4X blanks and the first burn was a coaster.

I went on a broader search for blanks and ended up buying Plextor PX 708A and now I burn good dvd movies on either +R or -R. And now at 4X. Nice.

I'm wondering if the Sony is going south, or possibly if it was damaged when I tried to burn on 4X DVD's before I realized the firmware had to be upgraded.

It still burns but the last burn was a disk with video drop out--looks like pixels that are blank.

This is just a comment on my recent experiences and pleasure at once again being able to reliably burn dvd's.

I too have the Plextor 708A. The few DVD's I burned on it made solid copies. I am very content with it, not to mention it has dropped in price since it was first released... Now if I could only get my hands on a few 8x DVD+R's to test out. :D

I just love the fact that this drive supports all available formats as well as adding speed to the burning process.

I totally recommend the 708A to anyone looking for a DVD burner. I am sure that there are plenty of other drives out their that are just as good... I chose to go with Plextor because I only had great experiences with them... I upgraded from the 504A to the 708A.

I've got all the same from Pacific Digital = DVD 4x Dual Internal IDE which support all formats..
I recomend to all it cost me $89.98 from "Staple" store..
If anybody lookin for good price and quality for Memorex DVD+R/DVD-R/DVD-RW
then STAPLES on Web or in Loco Store have plenty of them = 10pak $19 I paid for each.

If you are ready to buy a Plextor, within the next 24hours, this looks like the best price around...

Supposedly the "EVD" can be used to broadcast at high def. :):):):)

Though I have yet to see either a player for this, nor a single blank media. :(

Great. Next year I will finally be in the market right when dual layer should be common place. Dual layer will be a blessing. Hopefully it will take a while for EVD to gain market share though. Of course you wouldn't find a drive or media for it for a while. It was just unveiled!

Neat replies. Thanks. btw, I bought a Plextor 708A and now I don't have to worry about my finicky 2.4X Sony. Love my Plextor, but, pitpull makes me jealous with his 8X, though I hear 16X might be in the offing. Like WoW!
