Fisher 5th Dec 03 03:46 AM

Dog wrote that my post was SPAM.
I guess I didn't realize that I posted the same thing twice.
Like everyone I don't have a lot of time.
There comes a time when One must leave.

I close my eyes only for a moment, then the moment's gone.
All my dreams, pass before my eyes in curiosity.
Dust in the wind; all they are is dust in the wind.

Same old song; just a drop of water in an endless sea.
All we do, tumbles to the ground though we refuse to see.
Dust in the wind; all we are is dust in the wind.

Don't hang on. Nothing lasts forever but the Earth and sky.
It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy.
Dust in the wind; all we are is dust in the wind.

Dust in the wind.
Everything is dust in the wind.

Goodbye and good luck
Fisher.

Dude please don't leave sometimes the Admins and Mods are tough just let it be they were just telling you you posted wrong I hope you don't leave you seem like a kewl guy and if you do leave good luck :D

 Me scratches head

Fisher, you are leaving the board because of a SPAM accusation? That's pretty steep bro... I don't think DoG meant anything mean by it, or any of the Admins or Mods. They are just following the rules and policies of the board - They are doing their job. You shouldn't take it to heart!

Although I feel that other's are abusing their posting privileges in one way or another (which I would like to take up with an Admin or a Mod, if possible - shoot me a PM to discuss)...

Seriously - don't leave because of a warning... People forget - you aren't the only one. Please reconsider your leave and continue to chill with your crew here at B1! ;)

No. I'm sorry Fisher, but this is not gonna happen. Have a brake or something and then think about all of us that enjoy your posts here. BetaONE slowly changes over time and there might be reasons to try to leave. However there also are reasons to get back and in the end old truths stand:

We are programed to recieve
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

KingCobra 5th Dec 03 10:25 AM

On behalf of the crew, I'd like to point out that the entire crew was aware of this issue as it unfolded. As always we welcome you to talk this issue out with us through PM's. I trust things can be fixed.

But if you must leave....

I've enjoyed the knowledge you have shared over these years.

If you must go, take care.

PCTech 5th Dec 03 11:50 AM

I would like to say, thank you Fisher for all of your knowledge that you have shared. I think slickvic said it best, just take a break and come back. I just dont understand, why leave because of a warning? At anyrate, I wish you the best of luck, and God Bless you.

Regards,

Hardly a warning. Big RED letters that say SPAM on someones post is not a warning. Its an insult, a low blow, a shot... call it whatever - but it is not a warning.

This appears to have been an "issue" with crew for some time now.

Please read on and do correct me if I am wrong:

Looks to me like certain people do not enjoy Fishers contributions to this board. If that is the case why not just ask him to stop posting news etc?

Stringent 5th Dec 03 06:54 PM

Hope I didn't contribute to you leaving in that thread, I was only joking.

Sorry to see you go.

He was asked in the past not to post "news" everywhere, yet when you sign onto a board, see 2 pages of new threads from the same person- many of which he has replied to almost as soon as he posted them (Understand that? Start a thread and then reply to it???) then what are we supposed to think?

Posting the same "news" in multiple forums? Whats that all about?

Yes, the crew have known about it for a while. I

knocked his post count down by 400 posts, why? Because asking him in the past hasnt worked, posting "Spam" in large red letters on his multiple posts didnt work. What do you want us to do??? Ban him out right? He got a warning, he hasn't been banned- if he chooses to leave then it's up to him.

If you have any further questions then PM me, i will gladly answer them.

Taking someones post count and changing it is offensive. Using Admin powers to change that is not a wise use of power. You may as well go ahead and change his signature for him, its just as obtrusive.

I was not aware of the history as you put it, so I do understand the frustration the crew must have experienced. But the handling of this situation could have been accomplished better?

If he did not listen to past warnings, then either a ban or setting a mod preview posting would have been more appropriate.

We're arguing over POST COUNTS! This is totally rediculous. DoG has explained the reasoning. Let's leave it at that. To me, post counts are meaningless. Any admin can reset mine to ZERO anytime they want. Who cares! Is that why we are here??? I guess if you need it to feel better about yourself to having more posts than the next guy, then to each his own.

Norm?? is that you?? The same Norm who abused his Admin privs on a regular basis to get what he wanted???

Well faq me, thats another IP to add to the ban filter- i thought you had crawled under a rock whilst you grew a spine.

You are not welcome- keep your opinions to yourself and don't you dare lecture me about abusing my Admin privs you hypocrite!

Sephiroth 5th Dec 03 08:42 PM

I haven't been here a lot lately due to personal stuff, but, Fisher, this isn't the first time you've had your post count docked for this very reason. A year and a half or so ago now I deleted nearly 400 of your's and another person's posts because every section was filled up with news posts, other than the news sections.

Go for it :P

Norm, why do you keep coming back? To cause more grief for us all? Haven't you done enough of that for one lifetime by now?

@Members-

Please understand there are many things that happen behind scenes between members and crew. We keep this secret only until that member decides to talk openly about it. Fisher is not the only one on the watch list so everyone please obey our requests. We have rules and ask this only for the good of the board & it's members.

Please learn from this and:

1. If you have problems PM an ADMIN or MOD about it.
2. Use the Thankbot when you don't have anything worth while to add to a thread.
3. Try to limit your news postings to 2 per day.

I'm sure there is more I have not mentioned, I'll add to this if I think of more.

No more post counts! But they are still listed in your profile. Great decision! Woo-hoo :)

we can see what everyone thinks, if people want them still in their profile, it won't take me over 5 mins to reverse what i just did :)

unicorn 5th Dec 03 10:36 PM

1: I think the postcount in the profile is... Good! We don't need them in every post. From time to time though I want to see how many posts somebody is up to. That is when I se a name I can't remember, then it should be nice to be able to see what date they joined the community and how many posts has he/she done.

2: Can somebody please clear this up: Is Storminnorman = Norm = Terminated?

So it would seem unicorn, once again he has sneaked in through the gap under the door like a bad smell. I'm just waiting for his reply before i ban him and put a draft excluder down :D

SlickVic78 5th Dec 03 10:47 PM

I think that the "Top Posters" on the main page could have been the biggest issue... I guess no more, being that is gone as well! Good move! Besides, who would have been able to catch up to Bads? :lol1:

DoG 5th Dec 03 10:56 PM

LMAO, not unless Bads stopped posting and the rest of us made a hundred posts a week for the next 20 weeks or so :P

Ok, so (2:) is cleared up. Oh well... Good spot!

What about (1:)? Opinions?

DoG 5th Dec 03 11:28 PM

I don't mind the lack of visible post counts to be honest- if i don't know a name or can't remember how active a member is then i can always look them up using the search feature :)

Zone-MR 5th Dec 03 11:57 PM

I agree that postcounts do not need to be as promenent as they were previously, however I don't agree with removing them alltogether because of the actions of one or two spammers. Postcounts are useful in easilly identifying new members and welcoming them to the board, and can also encourage HEALTY competiton, encouraging members to contribute.

In regards to fisher, I can assure all members that this was an ongoing issue which the crew has been trying to resolve peacefully for quite some time. I know it is a delicate matter. Often posts considered spam by one member, can be considered a very useful contribution by others.

It did, however, get to the stage where Fisher seemingly developed an obsession with his postcount. Many of his recent posts were clearly spam by anyones standards. I do not like the idea of publicly humilliating Fisher by posting details of his actions, unless Fisher WANTS to have a sensible and open discussion about this. If labelling a message as spam is enough to get someone to stamp their feet, cry, shout, and leave, then it certainly leaves a lot of questions open about that members personallity...

Quote:

Posting one or two news articles you find interesting, offering your viewpoints, or starting a healthy debate on certain issues is certainly encouraged. The category will depend on the type of news. If political in nature, the "political discussion" forum is most appropriate. If they fit into any category we have a forum for, stick them there, if not, chit-chat will do.

Likewise, if there is a long awaited release of an application you use regularly, noone will have any objections in you posting, describing briefly what it is, perhaps your personal oppinions on the program, etc.

The problems would start if you went to:http://download.com.com/3140-2001-0-1-2.html?tag=dir

Saw the list of releases, like:

Quote:

#1 CD Ripper 1.72.39
AbsoluteShield Internet Eraser Pro 3.31
African Big Cats Screensaver 2.0
Amigo DVD Ripper 2.8.73
Chat Watch Professional 1.0
CloneDVD 2.1
Dewqs' Junk Mail Spittoon 1.8
... etc ...

... and then procceeded to make a seperate post about every application you saw, quoting the description given by CNET. For the full effect you could reply to some of your own posts, watching your postcount/penis grow. Of course, if someone asked you any details on these programs, you wouldn't have a clue, having never used them yourself.

When I log into BetaONE, and see the "latest posts" table on the front page being filled by a single member name, I consider it suspicious. If a brief look reveals that all posts follow the same format, having "Software title [version] released" as the subject, and the authors original description as the body, it is safe to consider it spam. If as a crew we point this out politely, and we are ignored, we have little choice but to insist a little more firmly.

Anyone can go to numerous download sites, and see the same kind of "news" I am reffering to (albeit slightly more up-to-date). I could write a PHP script to automatically fetch the list, their descriptions, and post them to BetaONE. If a members posts lack ANY indication of higher cognitive brain functionality, and could easilly be replicated by a bot, it leaves no doubt in my mind that they can safely be considered spam.
