I've been hogging the main pc for to long. :rolleyes:

I'm thinking about connecting three home pc's , don't fancy the idea of wiring miles of wire through the house. The pc's are located : one in the frontroom( internet connected), one in a bedroom and one in the loft.
The loft pc I want as the main internet pc ( for the file sharing programs and possible ftp) then that would free up the frontroom one for the wifey. :D

What would i need and any ideas on reliability vs price , I'm in the UK.

dont forget wireless networking can currently only go at 11mb but "affordable" home hubs upto 100mb
(with the CAT5 of course! - pop it under the carpet like everyone else :lol:)

i hav set up a wi fi 802.11b network in my house..

very easy to do..

i would buy 3 network adapters (i hav linksys USB ones, and i hav had no prob with them) and plug one into each computer, and then set up an Ad-hoc network..

the usb net adapters are fairly cheap and that would be all u need..

Ok I've been reading and reading and getting a little confused.
I think I need 3 Pci cards , a 5 port switch
shite loads of cable (oh yes I'm thinking more about getting wires rather than a wireless setup )

whats a hub and a router and do I need them? :blink: :unsure:

A router would be a good thing, It will do most of the work for, and would be effortless. No need to set up ICS. I don't blame you for not going wireless especially if you neighbors are close, My neighbor found out I was doing the wireless thing and decided to help himself (not his fault I should have setup wep and didn't). With a hub or switch, unless they are DHCP ready will have to be setup and configured, Routers have come down in price and are well worth the money. You don't need all of them just one or the other, but go with the router.

yes, you only need one of them, I have 5 computers conected to one 8 port router, all I had to do was turn everything off, plug in the cables to computer and then the router, and then the router to the cable and the turn everything on, the router configured itself to the internet and then the router configured itself to the computers and assigned each one an ip. and took care of the rest. I am trying to make this simple, understandable I don't know if I am succeding tho. Stay away from the hub, it shares bandwidth between computers, the switch and router do not share.

if you plan on drilling through floors or walls then I suggest you buy your cable in bulk and build your own, the hole has to be alot bigger to push a jack throught then just the wire
