hey guys, I would really like to start using linux, at least try it out for a while. but I don't want to buy it and all the distros seem to add a shit load of stuff so that you have to download a cd or two. And that really sucks when your on 56k and only have one phoneline lol Is there any distro out there that doesn't have all the extra apps? I mean I can just download them when I need them.

thanks

yep, you're best off buying it rad, even if you only download like 1 or 2 cd's you'll need a lot of stuff for linux dependencies and stuff when you go to install apps, so without all the extra cd's you'll have to download lots of stuff :P

Get Slackware!

I guess Gentoo's not for you then.

Otherwise I would recommend Mandrake or Red Hat.

I would also like to add, there are many people using Gentoo on a 56k connection if you would like to try.

With a 56k connect, buy the cd's.

Crafyc is gung ho on Gentoo, so I downloaded it this am. Only a total of 150MB for the 2 discs. Most other distros you gotta download at least 2 cd's for around a GB total.

I haven't tried Gentoo yet, craftyc, but I note it is much less automated than the other popular distros. Maybe this is the way to go so one can learn the lingo and the commands.

By far, SuSE 8.0 is the most polished and automatic distro I've tried, but it's hard to learn anything since there are no mistakes to be made. With gentoo (and a lesser extent Slackware) you must read the iinstructions.
[list=1] Heh heh

Hell yeah!

Gentoo is not recommended for a 56k connection. There is *LOTS* of downloading.

rikytik, you only need one of the CD's. Either the 9 meg one or the 100+ meg one. The bigger one incooperates the smaller one so you don't really need the small one if you get the big one. Any way there is more explanation in the install docs.
