Hi Folks, had a short Power Failure which shutdown the system. As a result there is a new IP# for the Server. Everything else remains the same as before.

Over the last while my ISP has been having various DNS/DHCP problems and outages (sounds typical) or likes to play around, which often changes the IP# of the Site. As an answer to this I have setup some linkage using the "DNS2GO" service which should improve the connect issue. Check the first Post of the Thread for "Updated" Connection details. Enjoy. :D

Accepting your offer to reply with thanks

Thanks Crowdirt for redirecting me to this post. Think I'll stick with the way i have it set now ...DMZ Host ... and run a good firewall on this machine. Have most things working. Couldn't get port forwarding to work right (maybe just didn't open enough ports) Now to figure something with the speed. Know not much I can do about that except hope it's just growing pains. Will send my new IP as soon as I figure everything out.

Thanks again
HotRod

Server still up and running?

Crowdirt 15th Jan 02 08:30 AM

Hi Morpheusbi, actually the Server has been up and running since October, over a year ago. Gets a Power Failure once in awhile, or drops off the Net due to goofs at the ISP shop. Too bad the ISP folks cannot run a Server as well, but then it has something to do with the Load etc.;)

What I need to add now is a UPS so the power problems are less noticable. :D

Hope it's ok to post here More questions about router

Having a little problem, not sure how to overcome. In the last week have had 2 different IP's and 4 sets of different DNS #'s assigned to my modem. Have no problems with the machines I let the router assign #'s to, but the one I setup as static and DMZ Host looses connection and have to reset DNS #'s and reboot. As far as I know the router or modem hasn't been unplugged or had power disruptions. When I look in status of router says DHCP Remaining Time 6 days. Does this mean every 6 days going to go through this? If I set the static machine up to dynamic and try to run DMZ Host to # assigned the machine is there going to problems that way? If router assigns a different # then am I going to have to set #'s again? One question seems to lead to another. Liked it a lot better when I had a static IP. A lot to learn to get this all running right.

All Help Appreciated

Thanks
HotRod

Morpheusbi, Read "Carefully" the Firt Post of this Thread on page #1.

Hi HotRod, I read through your Router Problem more than once...From your description I expect the problems originate with your ISP. One reason for several different IP#s is the ISP has been changing their "Subnets". That would be caused by major Network changes within their "Backbone" structure. It sounds like they are messing around with the DHCP "Licence Renewal" as well. Most ISPs use 24/48 hours as a time span. 6 Days is something that an ISP would do to reduce the "Licence Renewal" load on their servers. If the DHCP servers give you 96 hours, the "Renew" process is updated after half of the time is used ie. 48 hours.

All of this only relates to the "External" Routable IP#s that are on the "WAN" side of the Net. Once your Provider gets their "Act" together it should settle down and likely you will have a Dynamic IP that seldom changes.:) Once you are there I can update your Number on the Server.;)

For your internal Network (LAN) you can use Non-Routable IP#s (192.168.x.x) as described in the Linksys Manual. That part including the DMZ setup can remain the same once you have configured that the way you want it to be.:) ;)

HotRod 15th Jan 02 08:17 PM

Crowdirt thanks for the response.
If I understand correctly???? I would be better off running internal as dynamic until the external side settles down. As long as the DNS #'s on external side keep changing I will have to keep changing them on the Internal Static IP as well? (Reason I don't want to run this machine dynamic is it seems like more processes run when dynamic then stastic and this is where I run DMZ host). If I misunderstood let me know if not

THANKS
HotRod

I was trying to follow this thread but enede up getting myself confused again, I'm always looking for another server to add to my list , just in case. Please can I see the lockdown.

Crowdirt 22nd Feb 02 04:31 PM

Hi Folks, just a bit of an update....my ISP managed to change the Server IP# again...they do that once in awhile. The updated number is on Page 6 of the Thread as before.....

Lately I have been experimenting with "VPN Servers". Once I get better at the process I am thinking of running a Server that way for awhile, to see how it goes. The only "Client" side software that would be needed is a WinXP install. No messing around with FTP Client Proggies like FlashFXP etc. is needed.... :D

zetzero 24th Feb 02 08:41 PM

is this a closed server that just serves a few members?

Crowdirt 25th Feb 02 04:13 AM

Hi zetzero, well the situation is this, all Servers are limited in some way to what they can handle. A given machine on a 'Net connection has only a certain amount of "Bandwidth" available. My server has been operational for some time now and during that time some folks have gone and others have been added as it seemed appropriate.

My plan will be to build a VPN Server in the next while, the present configuration works well, but it would be interesting to try something new....Stay Tuned...:D

Interesting!

Dudelive 19th Apr 02 03:29 AM

@ Crowdirt you are doing one great job with this.....all of the explaining you more doing helps me as well as others I hope, see there is more to running a server than just installing software and giving out server info. You are looking at trying to use different methods to see which is truly the best and more convient. Thanks for your information

Crowdirt 25th Apr 02 07:39 AM

Hi Folks, after messing around with quite a few IP# changes lately from my ISP, I have added some Linkage using the "DNS2GO" service to my Site. The idea is to provide a place where folks can check for the latest numbers to use. I updated the first Post in the Thread with how to connect now. Basically you can start at http://CrowDirt.DNS2GO.COM:8080 now to get the latest Connection info. :)

Those of you that are running FTP Sites may want to check this out as well.... :D

Cyberion 2nd Jun 02 07:31 AM

Hi Crowdirt,

I PM you my IP address. The problem is that this IP will change when I go back to school. :)

I hope that I made you IP table cut.. :):) But I wont be offended if I didn't.

Cheers,
Cyberion
