The way I was raised, an attempt to make people laugh is a positive character trait. The criticism and disection of such an attempt is not.

No one is knocking alas for telling the joke. It just seems that way too much was left out in order for the majority of us to get the punch line. The way I was raised, if you don't understand - ask questions... ;)
