Are their any registry startup entries? HKLMRun or HKCURun? And as a thought have you disabled system restore?
|

As for sytem restore, you could try removing it or at least reduce the size to about 500 mbs.
To find out what is loading, I can think of two choices. 1- Start/Run/ and type msconfig to see what is loading. 2- my choice is a program called StartUpCPL by Mike Lin- you can find it here - you will see the tabs for HKML etc. You can uncheck what you want to stop loading - then recheck it to have it load. _http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml You might also want to STOP the Indexing Service unless you really need it. N.B. You didn't mention whether you tried to uninstall Norton's GOBACK or anything else like SystemRestore that allows you to reverse changes. The reason for that is that everytime you try to delete something a record must be made somewhere and the file "hidden" from view, all of which takes resources and time. |

Sometimes I have had problems with ZoneAlarm and RealONE player slowing the machine down. Also check your machine for spyware (use adaware) as well.

It seems you're having difficulties with Messenger. A good way of getting rid of it in XP Pro is Start->Run->gpedit.msc. This brings up the Group Policy window. Open User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Windows Messenger. There are two settings, "Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run" and "Do not automatically start Windows Messenger initially". Double-click on each in turn and set them to "Enabled". That stops Messenger under normal cirumstances.
If you use Outlook Express you will need to make a registry change to avoid a lengthy pause as OE tries to start Messenger when it opens. Start->Run->regedit then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Add a new DWORD, name it Hide Messenger, give it value 2. That's it. That may not do much to speed up your machine but it will get rid of the pesky Messenger if it's annoying you. Hope it helps. :) |

I never noted the problem until today. Smart FTP was downloading a 143MB file and suddently. everything else slowed down: SmartFTP was taking 100% of CPU activity. The d/l completed ok and shutting down smartftp zeroed it out. Gonna install the fix Kamikazee rerfers to above, and also noted elsewhere on BetaONE.
