I haven't used G6 for a long time, but last I checked it didn't support PASV mode if you run it on any other port but 21.
Does your friend get any connection established at all?

have you set the DMZ host? Put the IP of the computer you want your friend to connect to in the DMZ host, but give your friend the IP the cable modem/ router is assigned by your ISP, I use this router and I use this method to do ftp and host games I have never had any problem. If you use the DMZ settings then you will not have to assign IP to your computers or port forwarding let your router do the work

I have a Linksys and have been all through this same excercise. I traditionally simply forwarded Ports 21 and 20. Usually no problems, but sometimes people had trouble connecting. Recently I wanted to serve to some BetaOne members, so to assure easy connection I set DMZ. BUT, started getting adds on the screen from scanners.

So, going back to port forwarding and use a unique port number--not 21.

I read an faq once that said if you do this you should also open a series of ports in some high range not used by other internet services. Does this ring a bell to anyone?

I found my problem. I have an ftp behind a router and couldn't seem to get it to work despite the forwarding of ports. What I missed was a menu in the ftp server program where you put the range of ports for PASV to use. I had forwarded a range of ports in the router, but failed to put them in that slot, which somehow I had never found in Serve-U. I discovered my error, by playing around with Bulletproof and Titan Ftp Server programs. Serve-U seems less intuitive to me, but I prefer it.
